I wanna be a small scale farmer - What’s most profitable?
So I’m seriously considering becoming a small scale farmer and have been researching many avenues of profitable farming. I know a decent amount about business and landscaping but don’t want to do that for a side income. I really want to farm but have limited space (about a usable acre). I love being outside and have a fair amount of time outside of the regular schedule that I could commit to this trade. I’m seriously considering exotic mushrooms (the legal ones folks), lavender, specialty garlic, willow varieties, and tomatoes. Has anyone had success in these areas or does anyone have insight? All I’ve been researching points to the dramatic needs of small scale farming and if I can get it going I could try to phase out of the day job or just make a great side income. Stories or insights please. I’m in zone 7.

Mushrooms in home made tunnels. Good return - 33kg/sqm average, low maintenance, fast turnover and manageable by 1 person.
I have even got mushrooms by a person who used the bottom floor of a large house, lived in one room and used the rest to grow mushrooms, the entire floor of rooms was nice soil with thousands of button mushrooms and he just cut them fresh for me hf

(OP) Sorry but I have to keep it legal - I’m not in a recreational state either and my side incomes not worth risking felony or even misdemeanor status. Nor would I want to find customers to sell illegal shit to. Too old for that. I have a friend who’s making a killing selling custom stationary on Etsy and I thought about linking specialty items on there for willow or mushrooms that could cater to crafting people or cancer medicinals. (Not that I’m recommending them as medicine in any way - since that’s illegal too)

Use an aquaponics hothouse fish of any kind the more is better for diverse nutritional value, better fatter plants, humidity controlled.

Re: I wanna be a small scale farmer - What’s most profitable?
Multiple. This means multiple harvests which means more consistent income instead of only getting paid once a year.

Also it means more reliable income in case of blight or market disconinuity or something.

It also means easier sales. Its easier to sell 50lb of specialty garlic than 500 lb.

One exception. If you are going to make finished products then you might want to go all in. Jars of garlic spread. Asparagus-artichoke dip or spread. etc.

Damn. Now I'm hungry.

Also multiple items = gift basket potential which not only means more direct sales but gives friends family and businesses the option of buying your gift baskets for others. Bonus. List the gift baskets on your site at an almost insane price, then offer all-the-time discounts to business and seasonal discounts to friends and family.

Buy me a member ship and send me some garlic.

Take what you grow to local farmers markets and make sure to put up a sign that says organic, people will pay twice the price. I knew a guy that took regular veggies from his parents farm and did this, that why I’m cautious about buying organic from farmers markets. One acre may seem small at first, but it may be a lot more work than you anticipated.

One acre is not a lot for a common crop, but you might make it with specialty or exotic crop. Elliott Coleman on youtube has a lot of good info from a real pro who is also very interesting.

I have seen videos of back yards producing thousands of pounds of food. If you can get your acre certified organic, organic produce has a higher profit margin.

The next big thing is going to be fully mineralized organic farming. Plants need 50+ minerals but only get a handful even if organic. I spent 2 weeks in Vilcabama Ecuador, an area known for the high mineral content of the soil and also known for the longevity of the people living there. When locally grown veggies are juiced there, 4 ounces will literally give you a buzz. I can drink 16 oz juices here in the states and feel absolutely nothing because of the low mineral content. There is a company that extracts minerals from the ocean that farmers and gardeners can use to fortify the soil. Fully mineralized plants are also healthier and more resistant to bugs and plant diseases. Grow veggies that can be juiced and sell them at farmers markets by giving people samples of the juice.

Move to the SE US and build a kudzu powder processing factory. Huge $$$$$ for the refined cooking powder. Also, grow Gorria peppers, dry and powder them, and give the product a fancy name like Piment de New Orleans. Goes for over $200/lb. Also, Peppadew and Inca Red Drop Peppers are top $$$$$.
