I live near a FAA investigator who, when I discussed the JFK Jr plane crash wouldn't discuss the matter.

However, the official NTSB report places the blame on pilot error due to weather conditions (IFR conditions), which JFK Jr was NOT rated. He experienced "spatial disorientation", not rare during over water flight without horizon and lighting conditions to establish horizon. He and his passengers succumbed to the infamous "death spiral". A well known cause of many low flight time VFR pilots.
