They ruined me financially years ago.
Was a home builder, built a speculative home to sell, but economy tanked at same time and had to end up buying it.
Got audited for that year with an absurd ruling.

Got a construction loan for 400k and built a house with it that appraised for 500k. Ended up getting a mortgage on the house when the construction loan expired and it still had not sold.
Mortgage company cut a 400k check to my company for the house which I immediately withdrew and paid off the expired construction loan.

Auditor determined that:
1. I built the house for myself, therefore could not expense any of the 400k construction loan money used to build it. All declared as income.
2. When the title company cut a 400k check to my company, that was additional revenue of 400k that same year.
3. When I withdrew the 400k to pay off the construction loan, that was a personal distribution of 400k additionally for that same year.

In all, the 80+ page report stated that I failed to report 1.2M above what I actually made that year (around 120k). Taxes, penalties and interest of over 600k.

I had to hire people who successfully (and expensively) got # 2 & 3 removed, but was still stuck with 400k in loan money "income" used to build a house that I could not sell nor afford.

Hindsight is 20/20, I should have let the bank have the house. the main motivating factor in buying the house was the bank stated that if they took possession I would be responsible for the difference between the 400k loan and whatever firesale amount they could sell it for.

They are not going to arrest you, at least not until they've liened/repo'd your property and garnished your income.
