Anonymous Coward User ID: 75647909 United States 08/13/2018 08:56 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I have my laptop pc hooked up HDMI to a 32 inch television. I had a screensaver set to come on when idle, but one night I shut it off and have not set it back since. NOW.... When I am not using my pc, the television will turn itself off...(POWER DOWN)...but then, it will turn back on again after a bit, seemingly random. It cycles on and off by itself.....all the time, when left alone. Either my wireless mouse is activating it, or a setting on my pc through HDMI. The first time it did it, it freaked me out. Now, I just ignore it mostly, because I don't care. |

Scared the shit out of me, and I couldn’t go back to sleep. How could the tv just turn itself on when that happened? It was really loud, and freaks me and my wife out pretty bad cause it was so startling. Anyone have anything like that happen before? Quoting: freedomjesse smart tv? We are eternal... Anyone will a smartphone remote control app and an unobstructed view of your television, knowing the model, can use your television to troll you.......BUT.....an EAS alert at the same time, makes it unlikely that's the case here. |

It received a “wake on lan” packet and powered up. Computers have had this feature for 20 years. Energy flows where focus goes. I guess it was a test to actually 'wake up' the tv so you would be informed. I am assuming the volume on this test was much louder than your normal volume level? Louis in Richmond That is my arm now; broken for 7 months User ID: 75588339 United States 08/13/2018 09:56 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | A feature of HDMI is CEC and MHL. CEC stands for 'Consumer Electronics Control' which allows one HDMI device to control another. [link to www.howtogeek.com (secure)] Your TV was off. The EAS alert was activated so it sent a CEC command via HDMI to turn the TV on so you would receive the alert. It's not spooky or freaky, just an HDMI function you were unaware of. If I power on my DirecTV receiver my TV will power on because of the CEC command sent by the DVR via the HDMI link. MLH is the technology that allows your laptop or tablet to detect the TV and instead of displaying the media on itself, it instead send it to the TV. I can view this web page on my MS surface, but with one click of the mouse the audio and video is instead sent to the nearest TV in the house. When my Samsung Smart TV was destroyed by a lightening strike, I replaced it with a Sharp (lower price as they are mad by Hi-Sense) but I wish I would have bought a Samsung after the fact (superior TV) and added a UPS between the mains and my home entertainment system. I noticed as everyday when I came home from work the cats were lying watching it. At first I thought kitteh had figured out the remote control and was powering it on, but upon investigating found that the DVR would power on to record the news and at power up it sent a CEC 'on' command to the TV which then powered on. I had two choices to fix it: have the DVR remain on or disable CEC control on the TV. I chose to have the DVR never power off so when it records a show it no longer sends a power on command to the TV. I hope this helps. I was dead asleep and the thing turned the volume up all on its own full bar. It’s an older tv. Shortly after that my dog went to the edge of my bed and started growling like something was there. I jumped up to check on the kids and all was well but she did this all throughout the night. It was kind of creepy. |
