But when I read these kind of stories I always wonder, how do two people in their 20's up and quit their presumably decent paying jobs to finance a year long trek around the world?

In this case, a worker at the Department of Housing and Urban Development making about $100k/yr and and a worker in the Georgetown University admissions office making about $60k.

The ironic thing is that when I was their age, they could have made that journey in perfect safety.

Did you see those numbers somewhere? Making 100K with FedGov isn't bad at all. And I though admissions people at colleges were making $20 per hour, which is why we're advised to dumb down the essays for them. I doubt they were making that much.
