The DWP was just forced to reveal that 100 benefit claimants a day have been dying on its watch
The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has been forced to reveal the number of benefit claimants who have died while on Employment and Support Allowance (ESA). The figures show that around 100 people a day died while on the benefit. But the most damning revelations are in the detail.

As Welfare Weekly reported, the DWP has responded to a Freedom of Information request (FOI) from disability campaigner Gail Ward. She asked how many people on ESA and two other benefits had died between 2014 and 2017.

The DWP responded with the following figures:

On average, this means that over 100 people a day died while on ESA for the period in question. Breaking it down, the deaths per day were:

Slightly more than 7 in the “unknown” group.
9.02 during the assessment phase.
10 in the Work Related Activity Group (WRAG).
Almost 75 in the Support Group.

Deaths in the Support Group could be expected, as the claimants are often severely ill. But what’s of concern is the number of deaths in the Work Related Activity Group (WRAG) – the part of ESA where the DWP places people aged 16-64 who it deems can start moving towards work.

This is such a disgrace.

They have tried covering up for years how many people have died or commited suicide due to their failed policies and lack of help/resources for the most vulnerable.

I think they deliberatly made it this way in the hope the people would die so they wouldn't have to pay them.

Seeing as they don't even have doctors assessing a person's disability, but a pen-pusher instead, it's hard to say how many are too ill to be fit for work, but they remove their benefits anyway and hope you won't appeal.

I know a severely disabled person who had one of their 'assessments' last year and they never asked once about their disabilities, but instead asked demeaning questions like can they wipe their own bum after the toilet.

People are dying after having their benefits cut off by these heartless bastards.

My own cousin, a war veteran who cannot walk without a stick, has been told their car is to be taken off them soon. His nearest bus stop is 45 minutes walk away, because they cut so many bus services over the years.

There are many other horror stories about what they are doing to the most vulnerable I could mention. Not everyone is a scrounger and some people do need that help.

I agree with you, Keybored... I work in a residential home/nursing home and I have seen this case with many ill and elderly pensioners... they get their benefits stopped simply because they are deemed unfit for work and couldn't attend medical assessments or they failed medical assessments...

I have seen some residents just crumble and die over this...

It's disgusting and something needs to change the system for the truly sick and elderly people...

My mum can't walk unaided due to a hip replacement which went wrong.

In one foot she has constant pin needles. Imagine that. The feeling when your leg goes dead but subsides after a minute or two. Imagine having that for years!

She has arthritis in her hands so they a constantly curled like parrot claws.

The tablets she's on has made her bones brittle and her teeth and hair fell out.

The DWP assessed her (I was there) and the woman said that its clear my mother is disabled.

However the report said there was nothing wrong with her.

It took nearly two years to challenge that. During this time she had two strokes, one of which caused her to receive a sanction for not turning up to appointment as she was in hospital.

Eventually it got sorted and the reason it took so long was because the DWP legally stretched everything so all responses were sent just before the legal timeframe ran out.

This woman worked until she became ill. As well as bringing me up, she practically brought all the kids up on the street and everyone remembered this and helped her.

I believe without me and the rest of the neighbourhood, she'd be dead.

Yep... I have seen cases like this due to where I work...

The stress alone is enough and can kill them...

Good on your mother and the people around her for fighting her case...

It's getting tougher these days to win that fight in appeals...

They simply don't care...

Yeah, their letters (if they even arrive) are sent so near to the date that few people can make arrangements for their assessments. Especially if they rely on others to get them there or be at the assessments as witnesses.

The US equivalent is the social security disability assessment which does the same routine - deny on first try (unless you are depressed, seriously). wait for appeals, forced to get a lawyer who gets 1/3 of the money the disabled person is owed if they win their case. Sad state of affairs and many commit suicide in despair while waiting years for help that doesn't come.
Gen. John B Gordon and Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest were the finest citizen-soldiers birthed in America.
