Britain faces social unrest as swathes of people are set to lose their jobs in robot revolution, Bank of England's chief economist warns
Andy Haldane said the so-called Fourth Industrial Revolution will see 'the machine replacing humans doing thinking things'. He cautioned that the 'dark side' of the change could be disruption on a much bigger scale than in Victorian times..

The previous industrial revolutions had a 'wrenching and lengthy impact on the jobs market, on the lives and livelihoods of large swathes of society', Mr Haldane said.

'Jobs were effectively taken by machines of various types, there was a hollowing out of the jobs market, and that left a lot of people for a lengthy period out of work and struggling to make a living,' he added.. 'That hollowing out is going to be potentially on a much greater scale in the future, when we have machines both thinking and doing - replacing both the cognitive and the technical skills of humans.' ..

There are things we can do to slow or prevent this though
My local supermarket has self service tills which i refuse to use,its someones job im replacing.
My local bank has also replaced the people in the bank we automated tills,im in the process of moving to a bank where they have people.
We can all by our choices make it cost them money to even try this and have to watch their profits fall as people stop using their businesses.

It wont stop it but atleast you wont blindly accept it

No - the whole point he makes is that it's not just manual jobs, it's professional jobs such as accountants etc.. "when we have machines both thinking and doing - replacing both the cognitive and the technical skills of humans."

I can't see that happening anytime fast. It will be software right? always needs an inputer but still, i doubt unrest will happen. Nothing happened when the Rover got taken over by robots and it won't happen fast. Sounds like some fearmongering on the Banks side imo?

Of course eventually it is inevitable i guess but i will be long gone lol.

How is this intelligent? Mankind is supposed to develop this stuff to free up TIME to spiritually GROW. At some point we will give up MONEY altogether and work far few hours in the process... so we have valuable true "leisure" time to obtain education of all sorts and to actually enjoy living.

The planetary population is in excess and the creation of stupid jobs to "employ" the slaves is not the answer.

OH BOY this is sad. Your need to think better... Unrest WILL HAPPEN if things continue as they are and have always happened in this condition.

How much unrest has there been in this world since the turn of the previous century.. the 1900's? 100 million died of unrest in World War 2 alone and I have not been given a death count for the unrest since 911 in the middle east and northern Africa alone.

Are you even remotely aware of the unrest NOW?

Until they have machines that can fix the machines, (the big multi million dollar machines and systems) I am not worried. This is what happens when you expect 15$ an hour for flipping burgers.

Whilst robots can and will wipe the floor with human manual workers.
It's been shown even with the latest state of the art neural network ai's that can outperform even the best humans, that when paired with a human and they work as a team, they have the edge over just pure Ai agents. So foe thinking jobs, humans should still get the job working alongside an Ai, as long as the company wants the competitive edge..

Now if it was state run communism then using just Ai on its own would do just fine and outperform humans...

giving OUR Money away in favor of Jobs for people is the opposite of capitalismo, automation is inerently supposed to serve the capital, right? so capitalismo is this, people must move on by themselves to find some other way of living ...

(thats where socialismo differs in the main idea - the problem is the DOSE of government (people) interference, in regulation or social support policies; alas, if "government" = "from people for people", I think poorest are the majority, dont... so, people are a country owners and capital should be granted a "license to operate" in exchange of taxes for welfare...)

so every living human has education to fix machines (software)? even was true, what happens to wages when theres more offer than demand?

as long as your presidente (I admire much) can keep unemployment low, though not those much decente wages, people will move on - its a cheaper option to universal basic income; but this wont dismise the fact a few will be gainning millions just because inherited big capital and the rest of your nation will live working 8, 10 hours/day to win 1 grant or 2... a bunch of families controlling 95% of welfare I think cannot be called a fair model, ya know, even loaning to enterpreneur, one has to loan a reasonble minimum amount to fund any small business (if not inherited from Family - this makes it a bit easier) so "anyone who persevere and work can become successful" is, nowadays, not real - could be, in old West times and 60's

you may call "responsible capitalism" instead of socialismo if wanted but will just masquerade the essence of the philosophy underlying the 2 economical models

youre right but the point positions to "work with AIs in teams", naturally, are WAYYYY less than usual jobs

I am not happy with the product or the other things that technology they put in place have done. The quality has hit the bottom of the barrel and this is fact not fiction. The robots are only as good as the programmer and some how the programmers were not good at the creation part of products.

Give me a man or woman making thing and talking to me any day of the week and I happy, I used to believe that robots an other things of this kind would make life simpler. I did not realize the programmers would be the problem. Things now fall apart and the quality of life has hit the skids. Even doctors are so lazy they can not do anything without help. No, machine can take the place of man, it simply not doing the job satisfactorily for me.

The news went to crap, the helpers replaced the reporter and the news companies just looked at their bottom line and they are at the bottom now. Technology is good for something but not how they use them, it does not replace a man in quality nor can it.

I will just by locally or created by man place, there are still machines that cut and make and it needs a guiding hand of man to make it correct.

These new ideas are not new, man has dreamed of being lazy and being in a world of machine slaves for 100 of years and yes I do mean 100s.
Sorry I got a headache

It's a matter of perspective. Yes, this has always been the plan. Think Star Trek: they're just rolling it all out. This is also why you see the universal wage being piloted. But, so we are no longer required to work. What on earth will we do with our free time: dream and create, write, make music, or how about spend more time with our kids?

Our world has already pretty recently gone through a similar change: the industrial revolution. Locomotives, cars, tractors, even the humble calculator replacing all those bookkeepers and carefully handwritten inked ledgers. Think about the transition from coal and steam to oil and other types of fuel. Jobs went and new jobs emerged. And if we go back further to the bronze, tin and iron ages, what happened to the blacksmiths, the miners; their jobs may have been redundant but their skills weren't, they themselves weren't. I'm not saying it's easy, but this is life, nothing stays the same.

There really is no point in fighting the future. Change is coming whether you are ready or not. Prepare to adapt.
