I just took a quick drive around downtown Wilmington including across the drawbridge, and with the eye wall only 40 miles away, this is tropical storm stuff with some hurricane gusts. Might get more intense as she l the eye wall comes across. Damage survey is not going to be as difficult as I'd planned.

Observations From Aircraft Reconnaissance


Radar imagery and data from an Air Force Reserve Hurricane Hunter flight indicate that Florence has an inner eye that is open on the east side, and a secondary wind maximum that has already begun to spread inland across southeastern North Carolina.

The highest flight-level wind (102 kt) was actually measured within the outer band that is moving onshore in the Wilmington area.

However, the highest SFMR-measured wind was 73 kt, and the highest land observation so far was a sustained wind of 72 kt at Cape Lookout,North Carolina.
On top of that, NOAA Doppler radar velocities have been running around 100 kt at about 5,000 feet. All of these data
support reducing the initial intensity to 80 kt, but based on the higher flight-level winds, the gust factor is being set a little higher than is typical for an 80-kt hurricane.

If you watch your model run and then watch what is actually taking place as we speak you will clearly see the model is NOT being followed.

That's pretty fuckin' nifty, since the car charger has the necessary DC regulator to step higher voltage down to 5V needed to charge a USB device.

This is incorrect. The storm is still nearly as deep as 2 days ago. Understand a 950ish mb storm is typically cat 3 to 4. The storms energy has transitioned to that of a nor Easter like Sandy. Weaker peak winds but spread over an area 2 or 3 times the size of a normal hurricane. The result can be storm surge as bad as a cat4.. but now spread over a long duration. There is absolutely nothing to minimize about this considering this will be significantly worse than Matthew and floyd.

No way is this going to live up to what it was advertised as.

I doubt that. one town in NC already has 13 inches of rain. The storm is slowing. The wind is nothing now. It's still going to keep raining an storm surge is so bad, because of the size it's been.

Guess it's a nothing burger for charleston cause we still havent seen a drop of rain or wind over 15 mph. Glad it didnt double back down the coast like it was supposed to.

storm surges are going to be bad with flooding for sure. Forget wind. Storm is now moving westward with an official WNW movement on the 2pm EST advisory, but on radar it seems to be moving dead west. If it stays that way, Wilmington is going to take a direct hit.

Time to rest, while the hurricane doesn't. When I wake up tomorrow, it's still going to be there!

Wilmington is taking a direct hit as I type this. The eye looks like it is going to collapse dead centered here.

It' like Ike in a lot of ways. Came in at Cat4, down to Cat 2 as it crossed, down to Cat 1 as it came into Houston. But the storm surge was a Cat 4/5. Like this one.

damn. I said storm surge was going to be huge with this storm. Most people can't see, because it's overnight. One report has 25 to 30 foot waves right offshore at one of the buoys. when this thing comes on shore, it's just going to get worse for places to the north and east. If this was New Orleans, it would be completely under water again.
