People still live there and need to get their mail I assume. Why close it at the same time the feds closed down the observatory unless it was used in whatever crime they think was comitted.

Sunspot is a facility/compound containing, observatory, staff housing and a tiny post office. The FACILITY/ COMPOUND has been closed and evacuated. Why would a little post office remain open. It is on the facility/compound. The facility is closed. This is the mystery, not the stink in' post office. The whole town is the employee's of the observatory and post office. It is a facility/compound and has housing for the people who work there. But your also missing the point of the post I got off fb. There has not been a scientist/astromoner and scope hasn't been running since December of 2017. So they didn't see anything.
