CAN a hacker take control of operational systems? Just a guess, but I would think so. Anyone know for sure? They heard from people they know who still work there that they connected a low pressure line (1/3 pound) to a high pressure line (99 pound) by mistake. From what they've told me, there aren't regulators on the low pressure systems and it blew the internals of everyone's appliances apart." Quoting: fluffycat It's calculated in PSI. The lowest pressure mains are about 7 PSI and a regulator aren't needed is correct. High pressures lines run bout 100 PSI. I don't see how anyone can make that kind a mistake. After installing the line the proper procedure is to check the system for possible leaks. This doesn't explains why the system didn't automatic shut down due to pressure deferences or a sudden drop in pressure to to a major leak. . INFJ; We are the protectors. |

No solar eruptions/flares. Coronal hole and solar wind, yes, which occurs regularly. [link to www.livescience.com (secure)] ~*Ride the Wave*~ |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 19367385 United States 09/13/2018 10:41 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | On a system that large, it's quite likely that the main stepdown pressure regulator would be controlled with a PID loop via a PLC. Most of those systems have zero security features, anyone with Allen Bradley software could do whatever they wanted with a few clicks if they had access to the network, which isn't necessarily easy since most of these SCADA systems are on isolated subnets... but bust a lock and gain physical access and it would be a matter of plugging in a cable and you're online. But to look at the logic and actually know what to do, you'd need knowledge of the system to be able to really wreak havoc. But still you would have to imagine that there would be rupture disks somewhere that would burst, or excess flow valves that would slam shut when the high pressure gas rocketed into the low pressure pipe. This really shouldn't have been able to happen on a well engineered system, no matter how knowledgeable a person who was at the controls. |
