I'm watching NECN right now. Columbia gas sent out a representative to North Andover to answer questions and they didn't answer any questions. When questioned by a reporter why he was running to his car and not answering any questions, the Colombia gas rep said he was leaving with the intention of logging the questions and getting back to them. Residents of the community are very frustrated.

Re: 20 gas explosions in Massachusetts just now!!!
Most control valves are designed so that the valve has to open against the incoming pressure.

In this way the pressure helps the valve to stay well sealed and higher pressure should only keep it more tightly on the seat.

The magnetic coil that opens the valve is of limited strength and likely couldn't open against 100 psi. But if it were already open, the main burner would make an inferno.

Pilot lights would blaze up for sure.

Pressure relief valves ARE different and are designed to blow open from exceeding a pressure rating.
Why the distribution system does not seem to include them is a mystery.
 Quoting: Lost Pottawatomie

Regulators at the meter has a PRV, but because the system was low pressure there was no need for a regulators. So there was no fail safe for more gas interring the homes.

My guess is that somebody at the gas company messed up by overpressurizing the mains for that sector/group of towns and all of the weak points/systems with no or disrepaired fail safes were the ones that lit up.

I don’t think it’s going to be faulted on the homeowners/business owners in regards to what was reported yesterday. The gas company is not answering questions because they are going to be legally responsible I would imagine for all of the damage. I’ve heard of this sort of thing occurring in neighborhoods but not a large sector like yesterday. I’m guessing that some sort of pressure reduction station failed or was not set correctly causing the overpressurization. You as a homeowner could keep everything updated as far as safely controls but if your next door neighbor doesn’t, your house could still be at risk.

This gas situation needs more attention.

State police said 70 fires, explosions and reports of gas odors were confirmed to be connected with the issue.

Andover Town Manager Andrew Flanagan advised residents that “there is no clear timeline” on returning to their homes.

National Grid turned off power to some customers in Lawrence, North Andover and Andover.

The smell of natural gas was overwhelming and likely strong enough to make people sick.

Columbia Gas released its first statement on its website about five hours after the explosions and fires broke out.

This is the latest. I have no way to verify this. I heard this on WRKO Radio from callers that called in. Sources include the State Police and Rumors.

The gas rupture was related to some sort of construction in Lawrence, and the rumor is a disgruntled worker sabotaged something, causing it all to blow to hell, and it had to do with the high pressure gas lines like a poster mentioned here last night.

Again, I can not verify this but it’s what I heard.

Bullshit. Dealing with gas utility lines is NOT in the average home/business owners' skills set...Many know how to turn gas off at the street with a wrench (some do not)but unless they can smell gas leaks, they have no reason to do that.
Also the end users of the gas can do absolutely nothing about any crumbling infrastructure, etc.

Could be true, maybe not. There will be loads of rumors and gossip. Everyone has a theory.

I wonder how this could have happened in 3 different towns at the same time. That's what I want to know.

10 alarm struck again for more resources to help in Lawrence as gas is still leaking. The gas company has still not shown up and answered any questions or assisted in any way. A State of Emergency has been declared. Next is a Federal Declaration from the Federal Government.

I think some of the houses I've been in have had gas heating independent of other uses.

Mind you, not in New England. They had an obsession with giant tanks of oil in the basement last time I was there - weirdos.
 Quoting: TlvmmCpoft

I'm in Massachusetts, but the other end of the state. My home is heated with gas and we use it for the water heater and stove.
Electric heat is just too expensive.

What really bothers me about this is that these leaks happened in 3 different towns at the same time.
