Fire Alarm reported 12 additional fires that nobody has been assigned to yet... #Lawrence

I live in the next town over, Tewksbury, and there is talk amongst lresidents that there is more fires in Methuen Ma. FBI is on scened too.

Why are all of the fires coming from the top? Roofs on fire but not the bottom floors?

Most gas lines are run around 6-8lbs of pressure

Local Gas Company has been in a labor dispute for weeks, and the the Gas workers are NOT on strike BUT Locked Out - maybe related (?)

not uncommon. i am from San Diego California and 4 towns energy was all regulated by SDG&E. - Oceanside, Escondido, San Diego proper, and Poway. a major town and the suburbs essentially. probably more but thats all i am aware of.

IIRC most underground gas lines are at 10 psi or upgraded to 60psi.
And then regulators at each building to drop it down further to 3-5 depending on furnace/boiler/etc.
So if a compression station on the pipeline system went fucky, and ALL of its safety controls and relief valves failed AND the pressure STILL blew past EACH building or house's own regulator then that is a major strange occurence indeed. There are ALOT of safety devices in place to prevent this. A computer hack that caused a gas compression station to overpressurize is one thing, but there are alot of physical/mechanical relief valves/diaphragm rupture disks/regulators that are unhackable.

So maybe not "overpressurization".

One thing it could be, is that in winter the gas companies inject butane or other high BTU gas into the 'natural gas' stream to boost BTU without increasing volume or pressure. Maybe some extra high BTU gas got injected by accident? Maybe sour gas?

Or a fire occured inside the pipes and its a giant fougasse now. No way to stop it until it burns itself out.

One thing for sure- somethings fucky!

Oh this doesn't happen without a trace being left behind, someone at the gas company is involved in this.

I’m two towns away I just heard about this, this is awful! Stuff keeps going up in flames! I just had to text a buddy who lives in Lawrence to check on his place

Residents in the affected towns of Lawrence/North Andover/Andover who have gas service from Columbia Gas should evacuate their homes immediately if they have not already done so. Gas lines are currently being depressurized by the company it will take some time.
