Double check the fitting. Working remodels and construction I used to keep shut off wrenches for emergencies, if you do not have one vice grips or swivel might work better.

There's a pretty obvious valve to shut off the gas at the meter. It has a hole for a lock, for when they cut off service to a location.

Betcha "they" send the new guy for the checks.

"The Columbia Gas company announced earlier Thursday that it would be upgrading gas lines in neighborhoods across the state, including the area where the explosions happened. It was not clear whether work was happening there Thursday, and a spokeswoman did not immediately comment."

Two things this proves:

1. Whatever this was, it wasn't an outside job.

2. It suggests it was just a dumb screw up by the gas company.
