Possible major satellite collision tomorrow *Doom off, the satellites missed each other
Uncle intel, 18 Space Control Squadron is predicting a nearly thirty percent chance of collision between two large non maneuverable satellites at 14:02 universal time tomorrow at an altitude of about 615 km.

Not certain which satellites are posing the collision risk but I'll update when I know more.

*Update: I'm hearing the satellites involved are Cosmos 1461 and Kanopus V3. Both are Russian satellites. The former was a naval reconnaissance satellite, the later was a high resolution earth observation satellite.

You can follow the orbits of the two satellites here:

Or here, but you'll have to manually refresh:

*Update:
Doom off!
"(17 Sep 1430z) The close approach predicted at 1402z on 17 Sep 2018 has passed without incident. 18 SPCS/CSpOC has confirmed that the primary satellite is being tracked as a single object, indicating that no collision has occurred."

18 space control squadron? What do the first 17 think about this?

And, does this qualify as a doom thread? If so, your first?

Re: Possible major satellite collision tomorrow *Doom off, the satellites missed each other
Any possible connection to this and the shutdown of the Sunspot NM facility? Which hemisphere is anticipated to be under the impact?

And on an unrelated note, Stereo A and B seem to be online. I'm not really understanding the site, but unless they're playing "the best of Stereo" it seems to be up.

Are we expecting an "event" due to a cme related to that coronal hole? Could that be involved in the collision probability and why it is at 30%?

Thanks for any answers.

I have one answer. CME's do not come from coronal holes. Charged solar wind comes from coronal holes. No likelihood, or very little of there being a CME this week. You need a big hot messy sunspot releasing solar flares to produce a CME.

This may have something to do with why the observatories were shut down. I've never seen this signature in low energy solar flaring before. This is not a normal pattern for the sun (the red and blue lines looping in half loops at the bottom).

I guess the ISS is going to spring a few more air leaks. They still root caused and fixed the existing air leak.

So many unusual events happening lately:

- The Russians testing Kosmos 2539 satellites performing unusual maneuvers in space (Aug 19th). Could be used to cripple military, commercial and financial communications. US Space Command was freaked out about it.
- Sept 11th, FBI raids and evacuates Sacramento Peak Observatory, Alamagordo PO shutdown and surrounding communities evacuated. Other solar observatories across the globe go dark.
- Sept 15th Super Typhoon Mangkhut (Ompong) makes landfall in Northern Luzon of Philippines.
- Sept 16th Hurricane Florence makes landfall in Southeast US.
- Sept 17th Super Typhoon Mangkhut makes landfall in Hong Kong.
- All the recent strong and deep earthquakes around the Pacific Rim's "Ring of Fire"

Kessler Syndrome is a problem, yeah. But now they are testing specialized satellites which can (hopefully) absorb orbital debris.
