A giant and 'highly hazardous' volcano in Iceland is showing signs that it could erupt on a scale that dwarfs the explosion that disrupted worldwide air travel eight years ago.

Scientists have warned that Katla, a close neighbour to Eyjafjallajokull that erupted in 2010, is showing clear signs it's going to blow for the first time since 1918 and it's not a matter of if, but when.

Katla's cone is hidden beneath a glacier on a 5,000ft peak, making monitoring its activity difficult but Icelandic and British scientists have found by airborne measurement techniques that Katla is releasing carbon dioxide on a 'huge' scale..

Both VEI 7 eruptions in the last 6000 years occured during Minimums. Mt Tambora 1815 Dalton Minimum & Baitoushan 1050 Oort Minimum.

There are many studies showing a strong correlation between decreased solar activity & increased volcanic/seismic activity. Our sun is less active now than it's been in over a century (since the Dalton Minimum) & the CMIP 6 projection expects Solar Cycle 25 to be even weaker. Good luck folks.

Mt Tambora caused the worst famine of the 19th Century. Cholera, Typhus, failure of staple crops in UK. Irish potato famine killed 100k.
In US there was frost in June and August that killed crops, Asia rice was killed off.
No oats for horses, invention of the bicycle for transportation.
And the rains, damp fog.
