How To Develop Good Guard Dogs
My dogs started getting noisy about 8:30 tonight and pointing to the west side of the property, right beyond the fence. I went out with a flashlight, but couldn't see anything.

A few minutes later, I took them out of the gate and over to that area. The less dependable dog was leashed. Nothing. They carefully checked everything out and then we went back into the yard.

I gave them positive reinforcement for guarding. Something was definitely out there for a moment, and they both realize it's taken seriously.

I go out to see what they're pointing out. It's always something real. You can also fine tune their guarding instinct. For instance, I don't let them bark at the neighborhood kids. Adults, yes.

The male is an Australian Shepard, and the female is some sort of pit mix.

get a bag of small treats and a lawn chair and give them a treat when they bark at good things and ignore or discipline when not

No, just talking is good positive reinforcement for them.
They know when I say the words "cats" "kids" (and many others).
