Re: New law being passed that severely restricts drone hobbyists
I expect it would be a good idea to ban drones flying near Airports and near flight paths .

There have been some close shaves in UK ..

I would think it would be good to register users and if they fly them where they could endanger aircraft the book should be thrown at them ..

So a 400,000 pound aeroplane travelling at a reasonably high speed had a close a close shave with a 4 pound drone? Are you sure about that?
 Quoting: michaelj

well, at those speeds, a 4 pound drone could crash
through the windshield and kill the pilot.
but that's what they've got 2 pilots for.

Re: New law being passed that severely restricts drone hobbyists
Good luck ever finding the drone operator. Most people think drone flyers are like right around the corner or something. I’m sitting in my bedroom a few miles from you while I peep in your windows with my hyperzoom lens 🤪
 Quoting: Cardiak

They are scared because of the incident in Venezuela. Soon drones won't need a radio connection to a human operator to achieve a pre-planned route, thanks to advances in visual navigation.

If they can't jam them, it's a huge problem, because it's not that easy to stop a small vehicle that requires no outside input to navigate.
 Quoting: The Deplorable JP Warchild

think abou terrorist swarms with grenades onto your windows ;)

sure, same could be accomplished with autonomous little cars pre-programmed with a route to spread fast and detonate

perp can be in the other site of the word, only thing needed is to deliver the "toys" at the desired lauching places

Yep, it's all manufactured fear. The drive to the airport is way more risky than having your plane hit by a drone.

A guy made a CGI vid about a drone hitting a airliner and it went viral as a reason to ban them.

Even after he admitted it was fake people used it to push their cause.

“The fuel tanks in the wings are not exposed to any lightning sparks – hence why the surrounding metal, structural joints, access doors, vents and fuel filler caps must be able to withstand any burning from a bolt of lightning, which can have temperatures of up to 30,000C.”

But beware that 4 pound drone.

Actually I’m not qualified to comment because I don’t know, but surely if drones were a real hazard then they would have been banned years ago would they not? And of course nobody should be dumb enough to fly one near an Airfield.

Flying drones near airports/aircraft is already banned.

Well it's settled then. Some pilots have been inconvenienced a by a few incidents, so lets take it out on the millions of drone owners.

Pilots should always get what they want, because we are the little people.

Re: New law being passed that severely restricts drone hobbyists
Drone laws are coming and there isn't much that can be done to stop it.

It's rather simple.

If amazon can deliver a package to your doorstep for a insignificant cost, then so can a terrorist. When rudimentary AI starts to get weaponized we have a huge problem on our hands. It's one thing to get a person to commit suicide in order to deliver a significant blow to an enemy. It's quite another to have a 500$ toy do it.

Psychopaths shooting up schools will pale in comparison to remote untraceable AI drone attacks. It is going to be a nightmare. Mix with our current polarized political environment and we could have a domestic catastrophe in very short order. Drone doom is going to very rapidly become a thing.

AI is a force Multiplier and its power is tappable very long before we get anywhere near human level generalized intelligence.
 Quoting: WisdomS33k3r

And I'm sure making drone hobbyists register their toy drones will prevent all of that.
 Quoting: Interferon

Of course not, just like gun laws do NOTHING to prevent gun violence. But that's the tool the have, it wont stop law makers from trying however irrational the attempt. They won't be able to put the Genie back in the bottle however much they try.

Why would this be an issue?
 Quoting: Homie B Honeydick

Because this is how it starts. Require licensing for a 500 gram toy with wings. Then keep ratcheting up the restrictions until no one can participate.

Same reason we are against licensing of firearms by the Feds.
 Quoting: Interferon

That 500 gram toy flying above an airport as a passenger aircraft is landing at 250 mph will be like dropping a 100 lb weight on an ant, bad

So I read the "proposed law". it's not restricting you, it's making you responsible...big difference. you need to remember the airspace does not just belong to you. nor has it ever.
 Quoting: Homie B Honeydick

The issue is, for example my drone. I have a racing quad that I fly below the tree line. flying around playground equipment and soccer fields. Requiring me to have insurance a licence and a transponder on my drone will make it not worth doing,

also, if my drone hits you you will have a hard time explaining what you were doing flying below 100 ft anyway.

Funny how many things are illegal... until you pay the government money. Then, no problem!

That's why we need government so badly!
 Quoting: g0v

I agree...right up until I'm on final approach and your 500 dollar drone takes out my 2.8 million dollar engine on my Citation and hopefully doesn't kill me in the process.
 Quoting: Homie B Honeydick

True. But I don't think the government will allow drone flyers to do that even if they pay a license fee.

And what many forget is, terrorists flying a drone with 3 pounds of C4 strapped to it won't bother following any rules. For that reason, the only defense of offense: planes will need to be designed with drone detectors and fitted with drone killers. That's the only surefire way to protect them.

"When they ban drones, only criminals will have drones"

Heard anything similar before?
 Quoting: g0v

Not even suggesting banning them I'm thinking Insurance and radio tracking I have to do that with my 26 million dollar aircraft, should you not have to follow same you are also In the air.

the point is, when insurance is required to cover the cost of striking an aircraft, the price will make it not worth doing
especially when there is 0 chance of coming in to any contact with any aircraft... if you are flying your jet in a childrens playground, you will have bigger issues.

The original fear was the money that the aviation industry along with the FAA would lose with muti copter aerial filming.

No need to hire a aircraft and pay a pilot thousands of dollars per day.

Close to the same shot could could be filmed by a cheap multi copter that was owned out right.

Of course that reason wouldn't move public opinion so they went with the drones will crash your flight scenario.

Let put tracking radios on them, and require liability insurance...is that so hard. That way my 2.6 million dollar jet engine is paid for when I ingest your drone when it's in my airspace instead of yours...does that sound fair?
