Update 08:00 UTC: On this video you can see the first tsunami wave and swell entering the beach communities. People are not aware of the tsunami and only evacuate after screaming from other people who see arriving the tsunami in the distance.

A few theories the main one seems to be it was triggered by a underwater landslide.

thank you! i guess this must be the case as when the quake's epicenter is on the land it cant trigger a tsunami.

If you look at the geography of the area it makes sense. Palu is at the end of a u shaped inlet so to speak. So any wave would be amplified.

He is suggesting that in addition to the severe shaking of the earthquake, the ground was not solid. Normally, as sedimentation builds up land, micro-quakes settle the ground and compact it. However, when humans level land or build on top of trash or dead tree roots, there are holes in the land that the earthquake allows the ground to fill. The ground acts like syrup as it moves, so they call the change liquefaction.

In earthquake prone areas of the US, the USGS has maps that show the likelihood and extent of liquefaction to expect in a strong earthquake. An example of severe damage due to liquefaction is a neighborhood in San Francisco that was built on land where sediment (and human moved fill dirt) buried a graveyard of sunken ships. Over time, the sunken ships were degraded by microbes. An earthquake 50 miles away destroyed the entire community and part of it slid into the San Francisco Bay.

Oxfam is expanding its response to support 500,000 people after the Indonesian Government announced on Monday that more than two million people may be affected by the devastating earthquake and tsunami in Sulawesi.

At least 840 people were killed and hundreds of houses and buildings have collapsed, according to the Indonesian National Disaster Management Agency. The agency said the death toll is likely to be higher as local officials are now counting the bodies in local hospitals and places of worship.

Oxfam has launched an appeal for £2.6 million to meet the immediate needs of people in Sulawesi.

Ancilla Bere, Oxfam’s Humanitarian Manager in Indonesia, said: "Oxfam and our local partners are aiming to reach 500,000 people with essential aid supplies like ready-to-eat food, water purification kits and shelter packs. “The scale of the damage from the earthquake and tsunami is huge and there are fears many people are trapped under collapsed buildings like hotels and supermarkets. Search and rescue operations are ongoing.

"The disaster also damaged and destroyed a large number of houses and continuing aftershocks mean other people are scared to return to their homes. More than 300,000 people are thought to be homeless. A lack of access and communication still remains a big concern.” Government agencies have started to work in the area to support survivors of the earthquake and the Government of Indonesia has now officially requested international assistance.

Oxfam and local partners in the Humanitarian Knowledge Hub are mobilising staff and provide aid supplies.
