Ash spewing from the Popocatepetl volcano has reached the southern neighborhoods of Mexico's capital. The National Center for Disaster Prevention warned Mexicans on Saturday to stay away from the volcano after activity picked up in the crater and it registered 183 emissions of gas and ash over 24 hours.

Natural disasters continue to plague Indonesia, with the Mount Soputan volcano erupting on the island of Sulawesi just days after a devastating tsunami, triggered by a massive earthquake, struck the island, killing hundreds.

After months of increased seismic activity, the Soputan volcano finally blew off steam on Wednesday morning, sending an ash column as high as 4,000 meters into the air. Ash plumes are now moving in the west and northwest direction, with an alert level III issued for the active volcano.

Extreme weather in the south of Italy caused major flooding in Sicily, Calabria and Puglia overnight. In Catania, Sicily, roads turned into rivers lifting the asphalt and flooding houses and shops. According to SevereWeather.eu extreme threat warnings for flash flooding in southern Italy are in place until October 6.

Two tropical disturbances, one in the eastern Pacific and one in the Caribbean, are close enough to each other and are enhancing the tropical showers over Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Honduras and Guatemala. Total rainfall over the region has averaged between 50 and 100mm daily over the last several days.

The weather pattern across Europe this week is exceedingly supportive for extreme regional warming across northern Europe and the Arctic region. Temperatures will be 10-15 °C above the long term average, locally even warmer.

Various models are in fairly good agreement on the development of a powerful windstorm across parts of western Europe this Friday, Oct 12th. The very deep cyclone Callum is expected to travel just west of Ireland and Scotland and result in extremely severe winds, locally in excess of 150 km/h. Major waves are expected along the coasts as well.

Salak volcano (West Java, Indonesia) activity update:

The Darwin Volcanic Ash Advisory Centre (VAAC) has reported that a large explosion has occurred this morning (evening local time), with an ash cloud up to 50,000ft. (15 Km) This is the first eruption of Salak in 80 years (1938).

Nice page you've started X1! Sooo much going on with the planet, and it's an awful lot to stay on top of.

I'm just very happy I live somewhere there are no EQs, no volcanoes, no tornadoes, and no hurricanes. Granted, I'm in the middle of the desert, but that's okay-fine most days. It's beautiful here, too.


I just wish that human beings would realize that our collective temperament affects the planet, as well as all else that affects it.

Perhaps if we all mellowed out, then we might be what balances the planet with the rest of the universe, and calm will prevail.

It's a pipe dream, I know...but it's a worthy dream, too. Better to dream the worthy dream, than the doom dream.

The heavy storms this week in northern Italy have devastated much of the Dolomites province of Belluno. Civil Defense chief Angelo Borrelli spoke on Saturday about an “apocalyptic situation”. In several places, there is no electricity for days, partly no drinking water. After a landslide on Friday, some villages are not accessible.

Serious damage was also reported in the province of Udine. The forest in the Saisera Valley in Tarvisio has been largely destroyed. The storm tore acres into the forest. Thousands of trees were uprooted, reported the foresters.

So far world wide weather patterns are shaping up to be worse this Autumn than it was last Autumn. The impending ice age approaches...

Heavy rains in Washington state have resulted in salmon bizarrely swimming across the road. The strange occurrence was captured by several drivers as they approached a flooded road near the Skokomish River in Mason County on Sunday. Drivers spotted multiple salmon darting across a small stretch of the road on US Highway 101 that was covered in just a few inches of water.

An extreme warmth will develop across the Arctic region this weekend, in response to a very strong upper ridge and high pressure system. Northern Atlantic, Iceland, Greenland, Faroe islands, Scandinavia and Scotland will experience unsually warm weather for this time, with daytime temperatures 10-15 °C above normal.

The European continent has been experiencing very dynamic winter weather and locally extreme cold in the past 2 weeks. Now, the effects are finally visible across Canada and North America too. Towards the end of January, an exceptional Arctic outbreak will push across Canada into north and northeast United States, bringing a very extreme cold anomaly with temperatures locally near 30 °C / 50F below average.
