I can tell you this..
When my house burned to the ground, I had a small child. We didn't even have a toothbrush. EVERYTHING was gone but what was on our backs.
She was flown to a children's hospital, while I was left in another on the other side of the state.
When I was released, Red Cross was there. Put me in a hotel and paid for all my essentials to get restarted. Including funds for beds and other furniture to back on our feet. (I rented at the time and had no renters insurance)

They did right by me.

Contrast this with China, that moves MILLIONS of people in a day or two out of harms way in these situations. Sure, the people obey the govt more than ours, but no way would an old folks home be left to fend for itself.

We can do that too. We just don't.

Recall a young woman crying because when she entered the Red Cross shelter, they confiscated ALL personal care items (comb, toothbrush, soap, shampoo) she had just gotten a couple days prior from the volunteers at the church shelter. She felt like she entered prison without being arrested. Never got a follow-up video of what happened to her.

Imagine losing everything but at least getting the bare minimal basics for grooming and cleanliness, only to be forced to give them up without advance warning.

That data just blows my mind .. that the storm was 30 miles from the beach and still at 150 mph and 922mb!!!

It should have withered a little quicker, at that point. That was/is ONE POWERFUL STORM.

I don't think people grasp yet just how bad it is from Panama City through Mexico Beach and down to Port St. Joe. Panama City has gas leaks and water mains broken. Power lines, trees, widespread destruction. As you go eastward it just gets worse. Who knows what the cost will be, but the rebuild will take a long time! The only saving grace of this storm was how quick it moved through. If it did what Florence had done, this would go down as maybe the worst US hurricane ever.

000000 until the power was on we ate like kings , they parked a refer truck with a whole restaurants worth of food that would have otherwise spoiled.

dURING THE poST kATRINA pHASE JUST OVER THE la BORDER IN texas, lOCAL RESTAURANT OWNERS AND A cHURCH THAT RENTED SOME OLD sTRIP MALL SPACE NOT ONLY SHELTERED OVER 40 fema INSPECTORS , BUT OTHERS AS WELL ,GOT up fed us every day at 6 am and we watched movies after they fed us when we got back as well.
We lived out of our cars and worked 7 days a week , until most of the area had been serviced , . this was like 100 miles away from landfall.

we showered in the local middle school locker room and they had a public shelter there with over 200 people at max capacity.
the Cross did ok with the shelter but it was the private people who made it work .
we ate like kings

the only down side was the rampant snoring in our common sleeping area ,
I sellp real light and snoring was incredible..

Private citizens are where it's at. I'm glad your experience was positive despite the situation!

I am concerned though, it seems the Cajun Navy has government officials cutting them off at the pass. The fact that they also rescue animals gives them a 10 plus in my eyes.

the reason probably has something to do with dispatch, liability or risk , none of which matter to your average cajun.

I [also]advocate [a return to]civil defense, which if employed in orthodoxy, would use some of our tremendous tax base on the 17.9 trillion dollar economy, to teach, train, and deploy / employ people out side the disaster to help those in the disaster area , and PAY THOSE WHO HAVE TO EVACUATE AFTER THE DISASTER TO OPERATE THE SYSTEM THAT SAVES THEM ,AND THAT WILL ACCELERATE, WITH MASSED MAN POWER, PAID CITIZENS TO HELP THEM SELVES AND GENERATE INCOME WHEN THEY NEED IT MOST.
[ like for example pay everybody in teh shelter 10/hour for 6 hours a day , like it was per diem , so they have a pot to piss in ]

most say this is nieve, but we do have the cash to do it , and it would effect teh organization and the personal but little understood "handshake " aspects of business to accelerate out of a disaster ..

Radio needs to be retasked to educate teh public and operate teh lessons , remotely, of the school system so students can keep up and not catch up .
[ this would also teach the same lessons to every student of the same grade the same thing and not some liberal [ and gender bending liberal agenda] allow brutal but factual history , and establish a common pool of experiences to bring us together in a disaster instead of launching a cultural disaster because everybody is doiiing their own thing , and it shows when we recover]

stuff like this would also intrinsically organise the recovery from the disaster , which is a bitch to clean up .

i have heard of other stories after fires. seems the local chapters take care of ppl. on a national level or a major disaster they bring in the higher ups and screw everyone and everything.

I have 7 neighbors plus me who have a livable house in my area of over 150 or so in New Bern so don't let a name thing get you down, things can get way worse, and in my situation they did. It's so bad I refuse to ride around and look at everything still, I feel so bad for everyone but what can I do?

WTF, where is the National Guard, they have high water rescue vehicles! Our brothers and sisters in the Middle east face more adversity than this. Get the F*ck in there and rescue people.

Also a list of resources to contact determining if family members are safe, report of downed power lines & huge debris blocking access, etc.
