Quoting: ~kpm~ Just a point of order here... as a person who operates light duty commercial motor vehicles as part of my job. Failing a DOT inspection doesn't mean that a vehicle is unsafe. I once had a vehicle towed because the decals on the side for the USDOT number read DOT102148 instead of USDOT102148. Had another vehicle towed because the VIN number on the frame of the trailer had rusted to the point where it was unreadable. Had a vehicle that was about to be towed because the first aid kit was missing, but I had another crew in the area who managed to buy one at Home Depot and race it over to us before the officer's patience ran out. When you drive a vehicle with a Gross Weight Rating over 10,000 lbs (a F350 pickup truck qualifies for this, or a F150 towing a small trailer) the DOT can pull you over WITHOUT cause and search your vehicle, and they will deadline your vehicle for even the most minute infraction. It's really some police state shit, it's why there's a shortage of truck drivers in the US right now... nobody wants to deal with the bullshit, the DOT treats truck drivers like they're fucking drug dealers or pedophiles. It was a chop shop limo, it was not a Ford official limo “Cuomo said the 2001 Ford Excursion needed a federal certification to be operated as a limousine, but didn't have it. It also failed an on-site state inspection.” I don’t know if that means anything, but a few of the articles say it was not safe for road travel They are not chop shops, they are called upfitters. They operate under murky federal regulations. The President's limo isn't made by Cadillac. The body is and then it goes to an upfitter who does all the work. Many of them do great work. But, there are many who cut corners and don't understand the real engineering it takes to do the job correctly. Also, this was, I think, a 2002 model vehicle. It probably was bought by this guy as the 3rd or 4th owner with hundreds of thousands of miles on it. On top of that, up state New York is road salt universe. The undercarriage and other parts are subject to abnormal amount of rust. Brake lines, especially ones which had to be specially manufactured to fit the stretch are usually one off items being custom made. When these need replacing you are talking about $1800 just for the lines, not including specialized hardware and the labor. If you are going to rent a limo, or ride in one, make sure it isn't more than a few years old. You will pay more, but remember, you are dead forever. justavet In the end, our regrets are for what we didn't do, not for what we did. |
