Quoting: Yanez Americans always "over pay it". The F-35 is not that small. It's a bit larger than the Falcon F16. But compared to the F22 they look tiny. Here from a recent training in Norway. Russia can, of course, cripple any of their exported jets if they need to. They would probably sell the info to the Chinese, too. Think of the Falklands war, the French-made Exocet missiles fired at us, and the way the French gave us the means of defending against them. Just wait until fully autonomous drones with permission to use deadly force without human oversight are launched. They already exist. As a safeguard against hacking, they could go dark and block all comms, thus becoming impervious to any signals. Tainted Meat User ID: 76539860 Finland 10/10/2018 04:38 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | ... Quoting: Tainted Meat F-35 is a jack-of-all-trades. It's not an air-superiority fighter like F-22 and F-15. It can do air-to-air, but since it's been designed for other roles as well, it's not as good a fighter as a dedicated fighter. I've done research on it, because it's one of the alternatives we are considering as a replacement for our aging F-18 fleet. Finland are very unlikely to order the F-35. The cost would be too much. I wrote about this last year in my defence publication and most Finns favoured Saab Gripen, followed by Eurofighter and then the Super Hornet. I agree that F-35 is way too expensive and unproven, and a very unlikely pick. However, I am pretty certain that we will pick the Super Hornet. Why? Because of our familiarity with F-18s and McDonnell Douglas, Super Hornets having been certified for carrier landings (for rough landings on highway strips), and the massive manufacturing base. JAS-39 can do highway landings, but the manufacturing base is small. Eurofighter's landing gear would have to be strengthened. The Finnish public may favor JAS-39, but I think we will pick Super Hornet for the abovementioned technical reasons, and the political reasons (to suck up to USA). It has successful missions all the time. Yes, but it is still unproven in comparison to F-18 family. I didn't mean to disparage it, but from the Finnish AF point of view it is still unproven, and from the political POV it is too expensive. For us, that is. First Australia want licensing to build the F-35 in their country...denied, then they wanted it for a cheaper price...denied. Next the SU-35S has a different spectrum of use. That and they have already taken delivery of some f-35s and no SU-35Ss |

Quoting: Idaho Bullwinkle The F-35 is not very impressive at climbing and turning. Long range rockets do not make those a high priority anymore. I heard yesterday that the creator of the f-16 just laughed at the specifications on the f-35. F-35 is a jack-of-all-trades. It's not an air-superiority fighter like F-22 and F-15. The Super Hornet would make sense with the current infrastructure and training. I think the opinion in Finland was that it wanted closer cooperation with its european friends rather than with the US, hence the favorable opinion for Saab and Eurofighter. Saab has done a lot to convince Finland that Gripen would be an ideal choice at a much more favorable price and would support Europes military independence with two non-NATO nations working together. Saab has done a lot to convince Finland that Gripen would be an ideal choice at a much more favorable price and would support Europes military independence with two non-NATO nations working together. One of the sticking points with Gripen seems to be this: we know that Saab and BAE are going to jointly develop a new fighter. Our decision makers are afraid that we will get poor upgrades and other support when we get closer to the end of Gripen's lifespan (in 2040s). McDonnell Douglas can afford to provide life extension even to a smaller customer, but Saab can't - especially if they are focused on the new fighter. The politicians, and our military in particular, seem to prefer American jets - especially Super Hornet - because the last time we got great deals (e.g. local manufacturing of parts) and customization options with McDonnell Douglas. General Dynamics didn't agree to any and F-16 got dropped early in the game. The politicians also have the idea that making friends with Americans will get us closer to NATO even though we don't quite dare to apply for a membership, because Russia would throw a tantrum. Our 'European friends' can't attract us with similar benefits. Last Edited by Tainted Meat on 10/10/2018 07:29 AM The falt earth is here and the buttering of human beans has begined! If it were true, bad move by the Aussies. Russians have great military equipment, BUT the stuff they sell to other countries is NOT of the same quality. Export variants of Soviet military equipment [link to en.wikipedia.org (secure)] Export variants of Soviet military equipment were versions of Soviet military equipment (armored vehicles, airplanes, missiles) of significantly inferior capability to the original designs and intended only for export. Monkey model was the unofficial designation given by the Soviet Military to such variants. The monkey model was exported with the same or a similar designation as the original Soviet design but in fact it lacked many of the advanced or expensive features of the original. |
