Hurp-de-derp...

That's just genius!

Without power, all those Californians are gonna light candles and propane lanterns at night. Or they'll take their portable generators out of the garage, and set them outside in the tall grass, and fire them up.

That'll reduce the chances of a fire alright!

California has a lot of old people living in those areas. Wonder how many of them are on oxygen generators or some other home medical device requiring a 120v outlet?

Portions of 9 counties.

Not 12 whole counties.

Rather than waiting for a fire to burn up the fucker they shut it off first to protect other assets along the grid.

PG&E shutting off power because of WIND?! Jeeez. What have we come to in this country?!

There has ALWAYS been wind. Have they ever done this before? I doubt it.

They're afraid to get sued is what this is all about.

Valid point. Dominion Power where I live has a list of all people with medical electrical needs and they are always the first to have their power restored in Virginia and the Coastal Outer Banks through North Carolina following a hurricane.

It seems preemptively cutting power would be counter-productive in the larger scheme.

How about PG&E build their energy infrastructure to resist the effects of high winds to begin with?! Is this Bangladesh?
 Quoting: Drei Hump Nachers

At least here Dominion Power is actively relocating power lines underground to prevent hurricane disruption. We still have over 100,000 without power and crews from as far away as Canada are here restoring the hurricane ravaged electrical grid.

Santa Ana winds to elevate fire danger in Southern California into midweek
By Renee Duff, AccuWeather meteorologist
October 15, 2018, 3:00:25 AM EDT

Residents and fire crews in Southern California should be on alert for rapidly spreading wildfires as Santa Ana winds whip through during the first half of the week.

This will be the first significant Santa Ana wind event of the season, according to AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Ken Clark.

With the Santa Ana winds bringing in very dry air, a high fire danger is likely during the first half of the week, he added.

The heavy rainfall that doused the region on Friday night and Saturday will likely do little to help negate the enhanced fire danger, as the gusty winds, along with sunshine, will quickly dry out the landscape early this week.

As of Thursday, Oct. 11, much of Southern California remained in severe to extreme drought, according to the United States Drought Monitor report.

People should exercise extreme caution with potential ignition sources, such as outdoor campfires, barbecues, power equipment, cigarette butts and matches.

The strong winds can quickly fan a small spark into an uncontrollable inferno in a matter of minutes.

Having an emergency bag on hand can save valuable time should a rapidly spreading fire force a quick evacuation of your property.

“The strongest winds will occur into Tuesday,” Clark said, adding that the winds would begin to diminish by midweek.

Winds are expected to gust between 50-60 mph in the wind-prone canyons and passes and possibly as high as 70 mph in the mountains.

Such winds can down trees and power lines.

In addition to causing power outages, the sparks from downed lines and transformers may also start fires.

Motorists traveling along stretches of interstates 5, 10 and 40 can expect to encounter dangerous crosswinds.

High-profile vehicles will be most susceptible to being tossed around by the winds and possibly being overturned.

Motorists may also face reduced visibility at times as the winds kick up blowing dust or transport wildfire smoke.

Most rural folks know how to flush with a bucket...

Downspout water barrels provide water - unless you live where it doesn't rain (who would ?)

I put a five gal bucket in each tub and fill with water when storms threaten the power - even leave one in the extra bath we don't use shower - and one in the corner of master bath for winter power outs. WATER is SURVIVAL.

EVERYONE should know to scoop a half gallon of water - pour FAST directly at the HOLE in the toilet - a flushing swirl will flush the contents

Those who live in cities - TRY IT!

Sanitation is a SURVIVAL technique

Grid down should be a drill at every home

Pour water FAST making a bullseye for the hole - MANUAL FLUSH

Alternatively - pour water in back of tank - and use handle to flush

If they don't have backup water pumps already hooked up To a 12 volt system with solar, or a generator, then they aren't going to be able to get any water out of their wells.

They won't be able to pump gas at gas stations either.

or keep the ice box cooled.

they won't have rain water to use.

This is why people need to have a backup plan. Shit happens and happens FAST.

"The government isn't going to save you, You have to save yourself and take care of yourself." needs to be the mantra.

Are they going to offer free emergency radios so residents without power have 100% of being notified of advancing emergencies?

If not, would that deem pg&e as incompetent?

I think this is a beta test for a longer and more widespread scenario.

Shit, I've got a prius hooked to a 1000 watt sine wave inverter, solar off grid, and can make power with an spare car alternater/windmill and run it into a 12 volt deep cyclebattery set up.

I've even got a 12 volt solar set up and 1kw inverter in my truck and a 200 watt panel on the roof, so if you ever are driving out in the sagelands and see a guy with a beat up old truck vaccuming with an upright vacuum cleaner, and a big red bird dog in the back of the truck.... that'd be me.
