Portions of 9 counties.

Not 12 whole counties.

Rather than waiting for a fire to burn up the fucker they shut it off first to protect other assets along the grid.

Lots of that area has people on well water. They won't be able to pump it without power.

or flush their toilets.

This is messed up.
 Quoting: ol' scratch

Most rural folks know how to flush with a bucket...

Downspout water barrels provide water - unless you live where it doesn't rain (who would ?)

I put a five gal bucket in each tub and fill with water when storms threaten the power - even leave one in the extra bath we don't use shower - and one in the corner of master bath for winter power outs. WATER is SURVIVAL.

EVERYONE should know to scoop a half gallon of water - pour FAST directly at the HOLE in the toilet - a flushing swirl will flush the contents

Those who live in cities - TRY IT!

Sanitation is a SURVIVAL technique

Grid down should be a drill at every home

Pour water FAST making a bullseye for the hole - MANUAL FLUSH

Alternatively - pour water in back of tank - and use handle to flush
 Quoting: Theobromine The Deplorable

I've a well and a generator, yet I still prep by filling tubs with water and making as much ice as possible before a storm approaches. I even upgraded the ridiculously small 20 gallon water tank with a 150 gallon one and ensure it is full and up to pressure so our sinks will work were we to be without power for an extended time.

Some twenty five years ago I lived in an apartment complex and were without power for three weeks following a hurricane. Every one left the complex except Mrs. Louis and I and one neighboring family. I had a small generator that could power a couple of TV's / VCR's / DVD players, lights and one refrigerator.

I ran an extension cord to the neighbor and we put all of our food in one refrigerator and gave each other a key to our apartments and took turns driving the twenty miles every two to three days to buy gasoline for the generator and the neighbor took over cooking hot meals for both families on my gasoline stove [never buy one that needs a propane canister or special "Coleman" stove fuel] in appreciation for the power for life's niceties.

And while it shouldn't matter, as a conservative republican I will point out my family is white and the neighbors were black. Neither of us looted and we became great friends for the time spent sharing resources.

This is how people are supposed to act in times of difficulty.

Are they going to offer free emergency radios so residents without power have 100% of being notified of advancing emergencies?

If not, would that deem pg&e as incompetent?
 Quoting: graff2

Actually in Virginia residents residents in many areas can get weather radios and smoke alarms free from many fire departments and TV stations. The major TV stations also have smart phone apps that notify you of storms or hazardous conditions based upon your actual area by the GPS in your phone.

PG&E shutting off power because of WIND?! Jeeez. What have we come to in this country?!

There has ALWAYS been wind. Have they ever done this before? I doubt it.

They're afraid to get sued is what this is all about.

I think this is a beta test for a longer and more widespread scenario.

Shit, I've got a prius hooked to a 1000 watt sine wave inverter, solar off grid, and can make power with an spare car alternater/windmill and run it into a 12 volt deep cyclebattery set up.

I've even got a 12 volt solar set up and 1kw inverter in my truck and a 200 watt panel on the roof, so if you ever are driving out in the sagelands and see a guy with a beat up old truck vaccuming with an upright vacuum cleaner, and a big red bird dog in the back of the truck.... that'd be me.

Hurp-de-derp...

That's just genius!

Without power, all those Californians are gonna light candles and propane lanterns at night. Or they'll take their portable generators out of the garage, and set them outside in the tall grass, and fire them up.

That'll reduce the chances of a fire alright!

California has a lot of old people living in those areas. Wonder how many of them are on oxygen generators or some other home medical device requiring a 120v outlet?

Interesting - received a tweet last night that Edison was considering doing the same for LA, Ventura, Orange, and San Bernardino counties. So it looks like most of California will be without power if they really decide to do this - wow.......

Unfortunately, sometimes in high winds the cables of those electric lines that are close to the repeater stations touch sending huge sparks down to the ground. Possibly setting off a fire that would be fanned by the winds. I've seen it first hand. Luckily our fire department got there quickly and put it out plus it wasn't as dry as some parts of California is right now. Good luck Cali!

Re: PG&E shutting off power in 12 counties.......
Utilities generally do a good job keeping the limbs trimmed away from their lines, but, a 100 foot tree going down could hit the lines. That's what happened last year during the night, and the fire was out of control before anyone knew about it. The people died because they didn't have time to escape.

Utilities may be liable, but the rate payers don't want to pay for compensation, or to clear cut a much wider zone around the lines, or bury them. Catch 22 for the utilities, so they kill the power to areas under threat. Solar, with battery backup, or a generator backup are options.

After loosing power in a snow storm for a week, & melting 40 gallons of water on a wood stove every day, I got a generator before the next storm hit.

And another thing:

Last time we had a major power failure here, we got out the charcoal grill and had a BBQ (so we could use the meat that was thawed in the freezer)

And we weren't the only ones doing it. A few neighbors did too. Wonder how many Californians are going to do that?
Now that's a potential fire hazard.
