JOHANNESBURG (AP) — Congo's health minister called it a "dark day" for everyone fighting the deadly Ebola outbreak after rebels shot and killed two medical agents with the Congolese army who had been assisting health officials.

It appeared to be the first time health workers have been killed by rebels in this outbreak, which is taking place in what has been compared to a war zone. Multiple rebel groups are active in Congo's far northeast.

Health officials' longstanding fears about the potent mix of armed conflict in weak states — combined with a highly infectious disease outbreak — are being realized. In the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), an Ebola virus outbreak is now at a tipping point and threatens to expand.

Why it matters: The current outbreak began Aug. 1 and appeared to be slowing down, as most of the new cases were contacts of known infected people. However, as security deteriorated, new cases surged — with 25% of all suspected and confirmed cases being recorded in the first 2 weeks of this month alone. Experts say a combination of ongoing violence in North Kivu's Beni town, community distrust, population density and other factors are hampering containment efforts.

Tom Inglesby, director of the Center for Health Security at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, tells Axios that this outbreak is the "kind of scenario that many people who care about epidemic response, pandemic response have been worried about for a long time.”

LONDON (AP) - The rate of new Ebola cases has more than doubled since September after rebel violence in northeastern Congo caused response efforts to be briefly suspended, health officials said Thursday.

In a statement, the International Rescue Committee said it was "alarmed" that there were 33 new cases between Oct. 1 and Tuesday, versus 41 cases during all of September.

Most of the new cases have been in Beni, where experts had to suspend Ebola containment efforts for days after a deadly rebel attack. With multiple armed groups active in the region, health officials have said they are effectively operating in a war zone.

"This is a sign not only that the outbreak is not under control, but that without full engagement from the community things could get a lot worse," said Dr. Michelle Gayer, the IRC's senior director of emergency health.

Earlier this week, the World Health Organization noted that all of the health workers who have caught Ebola in this epidemic - 19 so far - have been infected outside of hospitals or clinics, meaning that the virus is spreading in the community.

Several cities in the region have populations over a million, are densely populated, and do not have treatment centers....

Slightly off topic, but a reminder that what we think of as the Ebola virus, may not all be the same. A new strain was discovered in Sierra Leone in bats, and we have much to learn from it. This also means there may very well be other Ebola virus types, which may show differences in how they spread or how deadly they may be.

A new species of Ebola virus has been discovered in bats in Sierra Leone, the country’s government announced July 26. Researchers looking to identify new viruses before the pathogens spill over into human populations found the new Ebola strain while sampling bats in the northern Bombali district. This is the sixth known species of the virus.

Vials of bioterror bacteria have gone missing. Lab mice infected with deadly viruses have escaped, and wild rodents have been found making nests with research waste. Cattle infected in a university's vaccine experiments were repeatedly sent to slaughter and their meat sold for human consumption. Gear meant to protect lab workers from lethal viruses such as Ebola and bird flu has failed, repeatedly.

A USA TODAY Network investigation reveals that hundreds of lab mistakes, safety violations and near-miss incidents have occurred in biological laboratories coast to coast in recent years, putting scientists, their colleagues and sometimes even the public at risk.

Oversight of biological research labs is fragmented, often secretive and largely self-policing, the investigation found. And even when research facilities commit the most egregious safety or security breaches — as more than 100 labs have — federal regulators keep their names secret.

Of particular concern are mishaps occurring at institutions working with the world's most dangerous pathogens in biosafety level 3 and 4 labs — the two highest levels of containment that have proliferated since the 9/11 terror attacks in 2001. Yet there is no publicly available list of these labs, and the scope of their research and safety records are largely unknown to most state health departments charged with responding to disease outbreaks. Even the federal government doesn't know where they all are, the Government Accountability Office has warned for years.

A team of reporters who work for the USA TODAY Network of Gannett newspapers and TV stations identified more than 200 of these high-containment lab facilities in all 50 states and the District of Columbia operated by government agencies, universities and private companies. They're scattered across the country from the heart of New York City to a valley in Montana; from an area near Seattle's Space Needle to just a few blocks from Kansas City's Country Club Plaza restaurant and shopping district.

From above...these are what have been gathered by the publuc , obviously research abroad gives leeway for more exotic experiments, but this is the U.S. Alone. A staggering amount of research. As someone with over th years of experience in laboratories,I can say as a fact human mistakes occur, and we are creating a great amount of risk given our governments, Universities, and private companies have made mistakes with. These are just the ones that I know about. Too often graduate students or employees without proper training are thrown into processes way over their heads and skillsets, where they could make mistakes.

At the high-containment labs identified by USA TODAY, experiments are underway involving drug-resistant tuberculosis, exotic strains of flu, the SARS and MERS viruses, plague, anthrax, botulism, ricin and the Ebola and Marburg hemorrhagic fever viruses, according to interviews and more than 20,000 pages of internal lab safety records and incident reports obtained from labs across the country.

Studies are also being done on a wide range of bioterrorism pathogens that are less known to the public, such as the agents that cause exotic diseases like tularemia, Q fever and melioidosis.

Examples of unintended mistakes abound. Far too many to post...You get the idea...I do not trust the CDC, WHO, or whatever potential government studies try to do to help keep us safe...Sorry for all the posts, but Things are seeming to get out of control on many levels. At a few labs, experiments have been done with strains of flu and other viruses purposely made to be more dangerous in studies that seek to understand how they might mutate naturally. White House science advisers called for a temporary halt of that kind of "gain of function" research last fall while expert scientific panels spend the next year studying its risks and benefits.

From 2006 through 2013, labs notified federal regulators of about 1,500 incidents with select agent pathogens and, in more than 800 cases, workers received medical treatment or evaluation, limited public data in program annual reports show. Fifteen people contracted laboratory-acquired infections and there were three unintended infections of animals, according to the reports, which do not identify labs and mostly provide aggregated counts of incidents by type. Reported incidents involve events ranging from spills to failures of personal protective equipment or mechanical systems to needle sticks and animal bites.

The program, jointly run by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the U.S. Department of Agriculture, refuses to release copies of detailed incident reports, citing a 2002 bioterrorism law.

Incident records the USA TODAY Network obtained directly from individual labs provide a window on the kinds of mistakes that happen. An animal caretaker in Georgia was potentially exposed to a bird flu virus that kills 60% of the people it infects when a defective respirator hose supplying purified air detached from its coupling in September. A researcher in Wisconsin was quarantined for seven days in 2013 after a needle stick with a version of the same H5N1 influenza virus. A lab worker in Colorado failed to ensure specimens of the deadly bacterium Burkholderia pseudomallei had been killed before shipping them in May 2014 to a co-worker in a lower-level lab who handled them without critical protective gear. None of the workers was infected.

Thanks simple, I'm trying my best to dig through the information. Something that can be a difficult task. Also, want to post info in as a fast manner as I can so that others may be able to look at it themselves from their point of view, and help to contribute to this topic.

Infectious diseases seem to be the biggest threat that we have. The most important point is related to warfare. Sure we have nukes, so do many others, but doesn't do us any good for blowing up the globe. Now, biological weapons kill, slower, but with large populaions over time. Social breakdown, medical breakdow, insurance, etc will be more devastating for the U.S. than many lower income areas.

Many people disregard the subject because they believe the "Flu" virus is just the flu, or "Ebola" is just Ebola and since we've seen how it behaved before, th we know it won't be a problem. The thing is, as some of you already know...Viruses have many specific strains, Ebola virus has 6 now, as bats have been found to be a harbor the new virus.

Flu, really only has type A and B that infect humans. Problem is, for example type A, may have a few strains, with each strain will be separate clades, and then even differences between them if you want to get technical. Bottom line is, so not become complacent, just because the "flu" did not cause the feared pandemic. The same goes with Ebola, and other viruaes . Never assumw

Mr jazz, the most recently found example, of the new strain, still has some way to go to answer those questions. To date, Humans have not been tested to have the virus. This does not mean, that if a human ate this bat, they will not develop the virus. To my knowledge only Ebola Reston seems to not cause symptoms in Humans. Of note, some studire, at least one I remember claimed transmission other than bodily fluifs, such as airborne transmission. I'd have to look it up, but there was at least one pointing that way.

Incubation times for most common strains are typically 7-14 days, which creates an issue with Ebola being flown over the world, as they can easily be in the earlier stages of incubation, while traveling, and then the virus reaches the destination, this allowing more geographic spread of infected people to reach international airports.

Cases have got shown to be before 7 days, and we'll after 14 days, so it is really estimate as we still are learning the virus, even decades after we noticed it.

The issue with The cures outbreak as was stated earlier, is that we have an extremely high chance for spread into larger cities in Congo, Uganda,Rwanda, etc. There are several cities well over a million in the region, and densely pouplated.

Those rivers run right along several countries. Bet impoverishrd , poor healthcare, but large cities. The spread of the virus is likely doing something it never had done before. Moving in all directions by foot, boat, or any retransmission they may have. Most of the villages which depresses were rather snall.

Once they encounter larger populations and natinal/international transportation, the game changes. Even in West Africa wherever 11000 died, you.didn't have people fleeing epicenters of disease outbreak.. How reliable would any contract tracing information be. It is likely shattered now, so those 5300 under tracing may now be impossible to find. This may not become the global pandemic that gets us all, but Things are about to get very inyeresting. Once multiple, impoverished, and corrupt countries each have outbreaks, cases will be seriously undercounted. Finally, expect those with the means, or family to show up in Europe and America for healthcarre. Be honest, if you were there wouldn't you try to leave ha....

so for now if there is an outbreak herewe quaranteen everyone and everything for 30 days. if they ain't sick by then, they should be safe. i can't remember the last data i heard about the virus or germ surviving on surfaces,but thought it said ebola could survive in the cold longer than in warm climates

ppl don't realize how far they reach every day.most go to work and see the same ppl .never figuring out that those ppl stop at gas stations and transact with others.let alont the mail they get traveled along with mail from overseas.just paying for gas at a convenient store can mean you "touched" or interacted with over 1000 ppl in the last 24 hrs.

by the time news of an outbreak got out from any of the big cities,it would be everywhere.in 24 hrs an outbreak could leave africa and infect all the major airport cities< atlanta,LA,chicago,denver,NYC,DC. within 5 days,the time the CDC would try to cover it up orr ummm investigate, it would be everywhere including most ppl's back yards.
