How can I not prejudge?
I hate Starbucks. But, I stopped in to wait on a friend recently and got a $4.25 "short" coffee (used to be $1,88).

Anyway, as I waited, I watched the incoming customers.

A 20-something woman walks in with the following appearance:

Purple hair (pulled out in front) from under a black knit hat
Tattoos purposely exposed on skin normally covered (cold day)
Black lace-up army boots which still had the original shine
Miniature stuffed animal cuties hanging off of purse
Double-wide ass stuffed into stretch-waist blue jeans

And, I admit. I immediately thought, pathetic snowflake. An NPC incarnate.

How can I not be so judgmental?

That sounds more like your 'inner voice'.

Personally I would keep it as it serves like an 'early warning radar'. You need not act upon it, merely take it as an additional piece of information your mind was able to provide you with based upon previous observation.
Until your military service has required you neutralize enemy combatants and invaders in the defense of your country,
don't presume to tell us that have defended you that you don't support every shot we fired to eliminate that enemy.

The human (and all other intelligent creatures) always and only assesses the current environment and its contents based on previous memories. If the current situation is very unique, we are cautious, nervous and sometimes scared in the discovery process.

You must prejudge because that's how the brain works. Nobody has any choice about it. You will update the memory field based on the completed most recent situation. Another done deal we cannot control.

In some circles, that may be called being judgemental. In other circles that may be where that saying about first impressions come into play.

First impression. Her style may not be your preference but unless you took the time to talk to her, you'll never know if she's intelligent, artistic, intellectual, interesting, etc. or not.

Contrary to the agenda, first impressions and initial judgements are not a bad thing. Why do you want to diminish your senses? This is one of our most important senses and often times, life preserving.

You can't. "Not prejudging" is another one of those myths that some people think is possible, but isn't.

Re: How can I not prejudge?
OP:

The human brain is a pattern recognition machine. Recognizing patterns is what it does. This is a GOOD thing, because recognizing patterns makes you better equipped to navigate your environment effectively.

If you deliberately STOP recognizing patterns, then you become a self-lobotomized moron. This is what happened to the political left of today.

It started with them refusing to see patterns related to race, gender, religious or political affiliation, and so on, because their ideology forbids such patterns to exist.

But the brain can't just selectively stop recognizing certain patterns, so the end result when you refuse to see certain patterns, is that it soon stops recognizing any patterns at all.

The brain effectively stops working normally, and you become a "zombie", or an "NPC". You become a parroting automaton without an internal reality evaluation process, 100 % programmed by the media and your peer group.

Very interesting observation.

Have you ever tried to enhance your brain's pattern recognition ability? To clarify; I have a theory (probably not unique) that we can actively train it to recognize ctitters in their natural habitat, but camouflaged.

For example. I will sit and watch a squirrel make it's way through a tree. I stay focused, and take mental snapshots every few seconds as it moves. My theory is that the brain stores those patterns and we are able to utilize them after they have been encoded. What do you think?

Re: How can I not prejudge?
Lobotomy, chemical lobotomy is the extreme stoppage, you do not want that at all on any level.
It comes natural through instinct and ingrained personality traits/character traits.
You can analyze things or just assume all things without considering them or looking into them.
You still have to remember things change and are not fixed except in the untouchable things.
Humans ingrained are harder to change so if you find one you would like if you could change them, then that would be a low probability of success and not a choice consideration.
The most precious things are the simple things in life, always present in the simplest of minds.

Re: How can I not prejudge?
Why would it matter? Would "prejudging" someone prevent you from giving aid and assistance to someone? You don't to like someone to snatch him away from an oncoming train, right? If Ms. Purple-hair started choking on some overpriced menu item, you'd still try to perform a Heimlich maneuver, or at least call 911, yes? As long as you can still recognize the humanity in someone, prejudge to your heart's content.
