I just got frauded!!!! some MFer just tried to buy $400 worth of crap at Sams Club 500 miles away!

so I assume you physically had your debit card on you at all times...

so the question is where do you think your bank details got jacked at?

Years ago, while on a layover in LAX, I used my card for a rental car. I think it was Alamo. My next credit card statement showed around $2000 worth of charges from stores I never knew existed....both in Los Angeles. I never went shopping.

I called the credit card company. They told me to write a letter (didn't have email/internet at the time). I wrote the letter and waited....no refund. I called again. The rep said, "Oh, you didn't send the letter certified mail?"

I said I didn't know I had to. I sent another complaint letter using certified mail. The certified letter didn't help. I didn't get credit for at least 8 months. It was so frustrating. One of their reps helped me during a phone call after 8 months of telephone calls and letters. Now they seem to have better system plus the "fraud" department.

Yes Ive had my card on me the whole time. Went to the bank to order my new card and the guy there said the fraudster had my pin number too so apparently my card was "copied" by a machine. He said most likely one of those skimmer devises that people attach to gas station pumps. Makes sense since I fill up at least 3 times a week and sometimes at sketchy gas stations in sketchy neighborhoods. Gonna stick to the big gas stations on main streets from now on...

Wow that sounds like a nightmare! Was the rental company the only place you used it in LA? Did you follow up with them? maybe someone at the rental company wrote down your card number and thought he could get away with it... I guess modern technology has its benefits, all in all since the moment i got the fraud warning to having my account blocked/refunded and a new card in the mail it took about 2 hours. I cant imagine waiting 8 months to get it resolved! Glad it all worked out for ya, and thanks for your story, certainly makes me feel better about mine lol.

i'm guessing the chip on the card prevented the sale at sam's club, technology is mankind's saviour

all the real estate agents i know fill up exclusively at costco, but beware of long lines!

I suspected the rental car agency although I did use my card at a restaurant. I never knew who to suspect. I just thought the rental car agency men looked more suspicious.

I appreciate your information regarding the gas stations. I have to share that info with my family. I do use my credit card at stores, but I haven't trusted gas stations lately. I've only used cash at all gas stations for about two years....no credit cards. They all seem to be run by Middle Eastern men.

seems that way thank god. Yea I know about the Costco gas, been tempted as its much cheaper too, but the lines lol. Also Im not a member, and im single so I dont need a palate of anything.

Its definitely hard to find the perpetrators, criminals tend to cover their tracks, especially before the whole technology boom. Good thing you pay cash, you might have saved yourself some fraud! I was at work one day and called the wife at lunch from work and she said she was going to pick up some things at Walmart and did I need some beer. I looked at my account a couple of hours later and said what the heck did she just buy lol. We always discuss large purchases. I had 45 bucks left in checking. I opened up my account and some asshat in Manhattan was hitting ATMs. Took almost 600 bucks and I live in Virginia Beach VA. Went to BOA at 3pm, had new cards by 4pm and my funds were back in my account by 6pm. Tripped out how somebody can do such things.

Damn thats a nice quick recovery! When was this? Last time i got a new debit card i got it the same day at the bank, but today they bank guy said because of all the new fraud crap in the world I have to wait 5 business days for my new one...

I literally just had this exact thing happen to me.

Finally got my new debit card today.

I all of a sudden got a text message to verify charges and someone was trying to use my card in Oklahoma...Im about 500 miles away from there!

They attempted $300 from an ATM then $47 at a gas station. Thank god my credit union caught it immediately.

I just ordered an RFID blocking wallet.

Gonna pay with cash A LOT more!

It sounds like we had the same thing...I had my card in hand and my credit union said they had copied my information from a skimmer.

She said they had other members who had the same thing happen within a few day time frame so obviously there is one somewhere in my city.


I guess there are little devices where people can quickly "skim" your card and that freaks me out. Hand anyone your debit card and they can do it with a quick scan apparently. They then "copy" the information from that little device to dead gift cards and those gift cards turn into that stolen debit card. They take those debit cards right to the ATM and make their attempts!

in my sanctuary city i got scammed at a middle eastern run chevron gas station a decade ago, still psssted and remember it after all these years, i was entertaining some out of towners with different plates - we all pulled up to get gas, i offered to pay for our guest with the attendant, jihadi was smiling and smirking, took my money. later did i find out that the guests also paid, but was too embarrassed to bring it up with my guests...

most of the jihadi-run stores in our metropolitan area have been busted big time for food stamp fraud... same goes with many other foreign run stores it seems, vietnamese...

I used to perform PCI/DSS compliance testing with POS (Point of Sale) systems. The most common type of fraud (skimming) occurs by hotel and restaurant employees. The best method to avoid becoming a victim is to never let your card leave your sight. For example, pay with cash at restaurants instead of handing your credit card to the server. Another is to have one credit card with a low limit ($1,000 or less) that you only use while travelling or online purchases. This limits your liability for unauthorized transactions. Never use an ATM debit card for online purchases. You could find your bank account emptied. Finally, review your online account transactions for unauthorized purchases at least once per week. This will allow you to report and file the unauthorized purchase with the bank's fraud department. It may take up to 30 days to complete the process. Usually banks will credit your account while the investigation is ongoing.

Edit: Most banks now send a txt message to your phone on any transaction. If yours does, use it! That way you'll be able to immediately notify your bank.
