Re: Spider with it's prey (What is that?!)
We have a crap tumble dryer, need a pipe and bucket to collect the water. The other day there was a BIG spider sat in it, I thought he would get out once the dryer was on.
Went to get the washing out and the poor thing had drowned in the bucket.

We also have a BIG WHACKING spider on the top of the patio window, so thought rather than the other spider die in vain, I put it in the web of the other spider for a free lunch, and I stood transfixed at how fast it entwined/cocooned it spinning round it.

Yes it was a boring day, it passed a few minutes.

Maybe a beetle, but sort of out of season for that. Not sure what sort the spider is.

At 1:20, the prey looks like a submarine. Maybe this spider is a little bigger than we think!

I don't think spiders drown. I had a giant one at the bottom of the pool. I thought it was dead. Couple days later it moved to a different area of the pool. Then a few days later my dog was fucking with it when it ass on the cement.

Wow, I think spiders breathe, but they have a different set-up then we do, that is for sure!

Spiders do breathe though -
[link to socratic.org (secure)]

They have a mini lung called a book lung. Basically, the air needs to flow over it, not within it, like our lung.

Could it be a fig beetle? They were late this year flying around the fig trees. Bright green on top, dark underneath.
Cool spider, great vid.

I watched an Orb-weaver survive a hailstorm
the other day. After hanging onto the eaves
for dear life she came back to check her three bugs where still in the web.I could see her relief as she counted them one two three. With her morsal's still intact She had
enough energy to spin a new web the next day.

Spiders are just damn cool.
