Wife has strong possibility of a job offer in Omaha. High pay white collar.

What is it like out there? We're from the megalopolis in South Jersey, very Rural area.

There's always an Arquillian Battle Cruiser, or a Corillian Death Ray, or an intergalactic plague that is about to wipe out all life on this miserable little planet, and the only way these people can get on with their happy lives is that they DO NOT KNOW ABOUT IT!

Re: Anybody from Omaha? What's it like there?
Went to a wedding there a few years ago - here are my impressions :

Scenic smaller city - maybe as big as Pittsburgh or a little smaller

Hills and trees - not flat like NJ

Easy to get around in 15-20 mins

Nice walkable downtown - wedding was in the City and historic hotel too- nice eateries and bars - had street vendor show down by the water - we walked a lot and enjoyed it. Nice train museum for indoors

Prices quite reasonable - has whatever you need from shops or Malls etc

Bridge goes over to Demoines ,Iowa - the Capital of Iowa

HOTTER in Summer (106F) and colder and snowier in Winter (snow in feet) than NJ

Nice smaller airport

VERY Reasonable Real Estate Prices - you can buy 3 for price of 1 in NJ

Should be good working atmosphere. Campus of AG America company downtown we walke around -10 ACRES with pools and fountains!

Beautiful landscaping around commercial buildings and neighborhoods

Cosmopolitan City for all

On the CT side :
Franklin Credit Union scandal - child trafficking ring- was in Omaha - serious case never completely "solved" even though head guy went to jail.
Connected to famous BOYS TOWN right there in the suburbs - that's where trafficked children were housed - and some kidnapped victims.

Re: Anybody from Omaha? What's it like there?
Also - people there so not put on aires!

Home of Warren Buffet - big Billionaire in his same house 50 years

Wedding was a Bankers kid - Dad is one of a handful in top penthouse of skyscraper downtown - he lives in same house last 28 years - split level nice but not fancy - I looked at real estate prices in the neighborhood - house would probably go for $150k-200k Max and drives average vehicle - nothing FLASHY in Omaha is the rule.

Try to fit in haha/ Jersey background the OPPOSITE. Puffing yourself or resume or background would be seen as RUDE- so would wearing anything with SHINY objects or material.

Very humble guy did the wedding ceremony ... turns out he was a top local JUDGE with a HUGE Masonic ring and yalmalka (sp?).

No Flash - just bang - everyone there quite LOW KEY but the ones I met carried all the Aces behind their back so to speak -thank goodness I have a few aces up my sleeve too.

Nice folks - don't underestimate them.

It's a footbridge that goes to Iowa! Maybe not to Demoines City IDK - but I had been to 46 of the lower 48 states and was excited to have feet on the ground in two more - Iowa sign Halfway over bridge.

Re: Anybody from Omaha? What's it like there?
My sibling lived there for years and only left after getting laid off/bad breakup. Apparently liked it. And we grew up without snow or any real winter, but that sibling adjusted and managed Omaha winters fine. My parents thought the drivers on the roads were decent. My sibling had good friends there. The zoo is really good, apparently.

I only briefly went there when the eclipse happened last year. I liked it better than Kansas (no offense people in Kansas). I got caught in a bad thunderstorm while driving, but if you knew the area you'd be used to it. My phone didn't have service for quite a bit of the driving I did in Nebraska, but I'm on a smaller carrier. This past summer there was a gang-related shooting downtown near the hotel I was at for the eclipse. But I didn't notice anything while I was there. For me, downtown Topeka was much sketchier than downtown Omaha.

Put on Airs? Nah. Born and reared in north Georgia Hills in the 60's. I'm a displaced hillbilly.

Wife born here in farmland. She is more Piney than Joisey.

We appreciate the rural life far more than urban or suburban. Real people are my kind of people.

I lived in South Jersey for a few years near the cherry tree and fruit farms and drove past Pine barrens and cedar lakes

You will LOVE Omaha !

If not - go for 3-5 years and make it a career jump - then move back

Re: Anybody from Omaha? What's it like there?
Not to knock the place, but just wanted to put out there that Omaha is about as much on the bullseye as it gets outside of D.C. as far as nuclear war goes. Home of SAC and a major financial hub (heard once like 1/2 to 3/4 of all card transactions pass through there). Remember when I was given a copy of the FEMA report from 1990 that Omaha just was littered with expected impacts (so was Southern Missouri as well which has always made me chuckle at the Ozarks being a "place of safety").

Not sure that'd impact you one way or the other but if you're of any mind to be aware of these things then thought it'd be worth putting out there.

Re: Anybody from Omaha? What's it like there?
I lived there from 1992-96. Did temp work for about a dozen different companies. Most of them treated their employees like crap and the pay is terrible there. Right before I left then governor Ben Nelson was on the nightly national news begging people to come there to work. I wonder why?

Be prepared for 40 below wind chills in the winter. Outside of Nebraska football which the people are obsessed with there, there is little else for people to do. A lot of bars and alcoholism in OMaha. When I lived there they had their first carjacking. Black area in the northern portion of the city is very dangerous(or was). Not uncommon for buses and vehicles to be shot at. Also people in Omaha ere not particularly friendly. Common sense doesn't seem to be to prevalent either.

My suggestion . . . avoid unless absolutely necessary.

Dedicated to the brave men who fought and laid down their lives on the beaches of Normandy and the plains of Europe . . . that their sacrifice was not in vain.

Re: Anybody from Omaha? What's it like there?
It's a liberal shit-hole, like all the other big cities in America. Omaha has hijacked Nebraska, electing ass-holes like Ben Sasse. With most of Nebraska being rural, the population of Omaha rules the state. RIP Nebraska.
Hope for the best, but prepare for the worst.
