Startling new research finds large buildup of heat in the oceans, suggesting a faster rate of global warming
The world’s oceans have been soaking up far more excess heat in recent decades than scientists realized, suggesting that Earth could be set to warm even faster than predicted in the years ahead, according to new research published Wednesday.

Over the past quarter century, the Earth’s oceans have retained 60 percent more heat each year than scientists previously had thought, said Laure Resplandy, a geoscientist at Princeton University who led the startling study published Wednesday in the journal Nature. The difference represents an enormous amount of additional energy, originating from the sun and trapped by the Earth’s atmosphere – more than 8 times the world’s energy consumption, year after year.

In the scientific realm, the new findings help to resolve long-running doubts about the rate of the warming of the oceans prior to the year 2007, when reliable measurements from devices called “Argo floats” were put to use worldwide. Before that, different types of temperature records – and an overall lack of them – contributed to murkiness about how quickly the oceans were heating up.

The higher-than-expected amount of heat in the oceans means more heat is being retained within the Earth’s climate system each year, rather than escaping into space. In essence, more heat in the oceans signals that global warming itself is more advanced than scientists thought.

It doesn't necessarily mean that, talk about leading...

If the oceans are warmer, why would you first assume the atmosphere is leaking, or restricting, or anything?

Do the surface temps on the ocean floor have similar variance? Did anyone check?

To a simple mind like mine, heat comes from the interior.

They're measuring the skin of a racquetball to tell us it's overall well-being.

This is like 2nd century medicine to my dumb ass.

I believe it is volcano vents warming that ocean.

The aliens have begun terraforming. Their lizard like bodies require a temperature nearly 15 degrees higher on average than current averages. 000hN00mrbill

This is a big deal. Regardless of what is to blame, the fucking ocean floor is dissolving.

Increased CO2 levels are causing the ocean floor to dissolve

The chalky white bottom of the deep sea is mostly composed of calcite.

Calcite on the seafloor formed from the decaying remains of corals and shells from marine organisms and the mineral is crucial for combating ocean acidification. It also acts as a neutralizer for the carbon dioxide in the ocean, but as CO2 levels in the atmosphere and ocean increase, calcite’s ability to counter CO2 decreases.

In some regions, carbon dioxide is already dissolving calcite and turning the ocean floor a murky brown, but this is just the tip of the iceberg.

“The rate at which CO2 is currently being emitted into the atmosphere is exceptionally high in Earth’s history, faster than at any period since at least the extinction of the dinosaurs,” said Sulpis. “And at a much faster rate than the natural mechanisms in the ocean can deal with, so it raises worries about the levels of ocean acidification in future.”

All that radiation the japs are STILL dumping in the ocean...
