so im trying an acid battery experiment
i researched and sulphuric acid is whats in lead acid batteries.so i dumped out the old acid and lead sulphate, rinsed it out with fresh rain barrell water and filled it up with fresh water.

bought some garden sulphur and dumped about three quarters tablespoon in each hole of a lawnmower battery.got it on 25 amp charge on charger.im guessing the heating of the charging and current will convert it to sulphuric acid.then level out with good voltage.

yes i know about hydrogen gas and explosions etc.i got caps off and outside in open air.so far i got 4volts.wish me luck.i got three of these old lawnmower batteries and five pounds of sulphur.lots of rainwater.

ive got some old security light solar cells and if i can get these batteries up to charge.then im going to see if solar cells with a ziener diode inline will keep them charged.then i got backup battery power if i need it.
im not god but i play one on glp.

mix some of that sulfur with Potassium Nitrate

throw in some charcoal grind it up a bit

set a match to it and see what happens.

Re: so im trying an acid battery experiment
That may or may not work, most lead acid batteries don’t fail because of acid . instead they fail because of mossing causing a shorting of a cell or cells in said battery. What you did won’t hurt the battery thought and it may improve for a bit

Re: so im trying an acid battery experiment
Why are you charging at 25 Amps. That is way too much current to regenerate cells in a lawn and garden battery.

You need to charge it slow, so the cells don't overheat. Try using a 2 Amp charge that has a duty cycle. Meaning it stays on for a bit then off and cycles. This exercises the cells and you have a better chance of rejuvenating a dead battery...

Also, the amount of acid to water (specific gravity) in each cell has to be within a certain range (1.265) using a hygrometer. If it is lower than that, then the cell is dead...

Use distilled water.

Rain water will still have contaminates in it that you don't want in your battery.

Re: so im trying an acid battery experiment
yea,i know about chrystals growing and shorting plates.theres got to be away to kill that mossing.my guess is stronger acid but like i said, experimenting.ive got undiluted sulphur on top of plates submerged in water.i can see it with flashlight.later i may cap battery and shake the hell out of it to mix sulphur more thoroughly.the batteries are a waste if i cant recover them,so no real big loss as they were fails to begin with.
the leftover sulphur will be used as fungicide for my minny peach orchard.

He is right, you rate should be based on size of plate x number of positive plates per cell x number of cells devided by total charged Amp hours. I would not let the temp get above the 140 acid spacific gravity should be equalizie between 1.298 and 1.304 at temp of between 70- 80 after charging

walmart was out or i would have.i usually use distilled for all my coffee and food needs as i got van de graaf generator that i have to keep clean and blown headgasket on car so radiator needs refilling about once a month.i dont have running water so i buy water.most of the time i just kill all birds with one stone by just buying distilled.
wallmart sells out of it fast.lots of people buying distilled these days.

so reserve backup is rain water barrels.we had 2.5 inches two days ago.its not pure but close enough.im not a doctor, just a redkneck.

I'm pretty sure you mean pouring water into the acid, don't you? I think caution is in order, regardless, but the "experts" recommend acid-into-water, not water-into-acid.

I got some magnesium ribbon to make a battery once.

I never did make it, but maybe I will try my own experiment.

If you take a piece of copper, then wrap a paper towel that was soaked in Epsom salt and water around it, then wrap the magnesium ribbon around the paper towel so the two metals are separated by the now dry paper towel, it will make a battery.
