9 Years into Obama's 'Common-Core' program - Math scores at 20 year low | |

The average math score for the graduating class of 2018 was 20.5, marking a steady decline from 20.9 five years ago, and virtually no progress since 1998, when it was 20.6. Each of the four sections of the college-entrance exam is graded on a 36-point scale. “We’re at a very dangerous point. And if we do nothing, it will keep on declining,” ACT’s chief executive officer, Marten Roorda, said in an interview. [link to www.edweek.org (secure)] ---------------------------------------------- SAT scores also dropped post-Common Core until it fully implemented a new version tailored for Common Core. How convenient. Even after the test was overhauled to match Common Core, average test scores increased by 0.7 percent in the most recent results. It represents almost no difference to pre-Common Core results, and the public can’t know exactly how the scores were recentered and altered, either. In all the previous SAT overhauls, average scores technically went up but statistical analyses show they’ve actually been steadily losing ground over the past 60 years. My nephew was having trouble with his division, I said I could help him. Looked at the materials. The process they asking him to go through to do their version of long division was so ridiculously complicated, I had trouble doing it. Simple long division!!! So i showed him traditional long division (in about 5 minutes! ) so he could get the right answer, then he could fake their “method” to show his work. They screwed up fricking long division...... As a military family, we have lived in 3 different states since common core was introduced and believe me, this is not the case. They might learn multiplication in third grade in one state and in fourth in another. When we moved to PA, my kids were way behind in math and had to work hard to catch up. Then we moved to California and they were way ahead. After a year, we moved off post and they switched schools and the were way behind again...their new school is even using the same curriculum, but they don't teach it at the same pace. I have been supplementing what they get in school, so that doesn't happen in our next move. |

She's supposed to be in 7th grade but loves her 10th grade algebra curriculum and excels in physics. And a full junior high/high school mixed curriculum only takes her a few hours a day, with little involvement from me. Yes, she's obviously above average, but it has a lot to do with real curriculum, old-school techniques, and structure. Something the public schools have abandoned. He comes home and tells me their math isn't really math. Yeah. Constructivist math was developed by lowly educated people who struggled with math and was made to try and short cut someone into doing mental math the way someone who's been doing math for years would. But all it does is slow them down. Here's the worst part, the kids that do well with it will do even better under a more traditional approach. The kids that can't do it (lower IQ) are massively harmed. And you wonder why there is debate to literally eliminate 9th grade algebra as a college graduation requirement... too many "college" people can't do 9th grade algebra. Not a joke. This is where we are. |
