I'd heard that during initiation they put you in coffin for a set amount of time
If so, I can see where that comes from
They certainly weren't the first to perform such ceremonies
The ancient mystery schools come to mind
Quoting: Centurionx I genuinely can't remember if we spent time in a coffin. I was drugged out of my mind for half of the ceremonies. They do follow a lot of ritual, though. Even business is expected to have certain ritual aspects attached to be official. My only real experience with religion has been Catholic school and the church they'd make students go to, and a lot of it significantly reminded me of that - the incense, chanting in unison, walking in order, having a "master of ceremonies" reminiscent of a priest, etc. It was like a more darkly lit church experience.
