Actually, I had a close run-in with the Klamathon fire earlier this year (was at a friend’s house) which was terrifying, and have had to evacuate my current property 2x for fires over the last 15 years or so. My property is nestled in the foothills with acreage and lots of trees. We have very good brush clearance for my house, but that is only a little help in a fire storm like we just had. I always have a bag packed during fire season with my most essential items. Our skies in this area were smoky from fires from the Klamatihon fire throught the Carr Fire and a couple others; when the skies finally cleared a month ago, I happily thought fire season was over and I unpacked my “go” bag. The Camp Fire happened outside of normal fire season, when it should not have; if we had had a normal Fall rainy season it never would have. |

I don't see any way for Paradise to recover. I don't the extent of destruction in Magalia or Concow which are much smaller, right? Probably none can recover. Imagine being someone whose home survived the fire. Then what? No town. No grocery stores, no garbage service, hospital, no doctors, no dentists, no veterinarians, no drug stores, no auto mechanics, just nothing that is part of a normal community. Life will only be fit for hermits. Why even bother getting utilities back on in such a condition? It would take many, many years to rebuild and then fire can come again. Yeah, in a big firestorm brush clearance from individual properties may do little. Nobody can clear enough to stop fires in California. It's too dry. I know this is easy to say but I hope you give serious consideration to moving. [link to www.pbase.com] I recall reading an article, which I may have even posted in this thread, that people in Paradise knew they would likely have another big fire. The same can be said for places like Malibu which has also had terrible fires. It takes a long time to drive in and out of those places and they're fire traps. I was just looking, last night, at pictures of a place called Malibu Lake. I was never aware of it when I lived. Intoxicatingly beautiful and all I could think of while looking at the pics was fire trap. It's like if this year's fire didn't get you, the next or the next after that will. Extreme fire conditions today for San Diego! New numbers are coming in Quoting: Madame Royston Now reporting over 10,000 structures destroyed, over 8,600 are houses. 138,000 acres still only 35% contained. Smoke has mostly been in the hazardous range throughout the valley Spent today crying with a good friend when she told be about her son and grandson who got trapped by fire on 4 sides and called and told her goodbye; their lives were saved by some fire fighters who sprayed them and others with water in a field. My friend and her son both lost their houses and absolutely everything. Both a horrible loss and miraculous survival. I don't know how people go about putting their lives back together after such tragedy. The older ones never will be able to. So true; many of the very old if they rented had no insurance. My friend literally has had a light go out of her eyes. As to putting lives back together, where do you start? She says she will rebuild (as do most of my other friends who have lost homes; but practically how long does that take?). Plus Paradise (and Magalia and Concow) will never be close to the same again. Sadly, I think you have the right of it. It’s pretty far down the hill to Chico for services/civilization. And how depressing to have so much destruction all around you. |

Extreme fire conditions today for San Diego! In 1993, when both Malibu and Laguna had huge fires, I worked in Hermosa Beach, 25 miles south of Malibu, as the crow flies, and ashes fell like snow all over the town. That's a long way for ashes to fly and gives an indication of how big the fire was. Quoting: thinking... Wow; indeed! We are all talking about how it feels like “nuclear winter” here in Butte County; it’s about 20 degrees less than surrounding areas, so in the 50s, you can barely see the sun and it’s pretty dark. Hope it clears up soon for all the crops in this area (although most have already been harvested). My girlfriend, in Chico, who took in the lady and critters from Paradise, told me (couple of days ago) it was like 40 degrees in the morning. All of those people in tents must be freezing on top of being so traumatized. I worry about my friend in Chico. I used to think being in a city provided some barrier to these fires but I don't think so, now. In his poem Human Pride, Marx admits that his aim is not to improve the world, reform or revolutionize it, but simply to ruin it and enjoy it being ruined: With disdain I will throw my gauntlet full in the face of the world, And see the collapse of this pygmy giant whose fall will not stifle my ardor. Then will I wander godlike and victorious through the ruins of the world And, giving my words an active force, I will feel equal to the Creator. “Looking for consciousness in the brain is like looking in the radio for the announcer.” – Nasseim Haramein, Director of Research for the Resonance Project |
