Both a horrible loss and miraculous survival.

I don't know how people go about putting their lives back together after such tragedy. The older ones never will be able to.
 Quoting: thinking...

So true; many of the very old if they rented had no insurance.

My friend literally has had a light go out of her eyes. As to putting lives back together, where do you start? She says she will rebuild (as do most of my other friends who have lost homes; but practically how long does that take?). Plus Paradise (and Magalia and Concow) will never be close to the same again.
 Quoting: Madame Royston

I don't see any way for Paradise to recover. I don't the extent of destruction in Magalia or Concow which are much smaller, right? Probably none can recover. Imagine being someone whose home survived the fire. Then what? No town. No grocery stores, no garbage service, hospital, no doctors, no dentists, no veterinarians, no drug stores, no auto mechanics, just nothing that is part of a normal community. Life will only be fit for hermits. Why even bother getting utilities back on in such a condition? It would take many, many years to rebuild and then fire can come again.
 Quoting: thinking...

Sadly, I think you have the right of it. It’s pretty far down the hill to Chico for services/civilization. And how depressing to have so much destruction all around you.
 Quoting: Madame Royston

When I think of what I saw in Malibu and Laguna canyons, after the 1993 fires (I went and sandbagged after), I'm astounded how people rebuild. There is no way in hell I would not learn that lesson the first time.

I would feel safe in a place like Palm Springs, where you're getting into just plain sand but who wants to live there? It's the beautiful places that are the most dangerous.

Looks like that gorgeous Malibu Lake area that I mentioned earlier got hit by the Woolsey fire:

Deadly California fire could worsen state's homeless crisis

[link to www.nbcnews.com (secure)]

The #CampFire is still burning in Butte County (35% contained). This is near Cresta along Hwy 70 in Plumas National Forest. Firefighters are currently battling flames off Big Ben Road.

From that article:

"The housing crisis hit us hard like everywhere else," said Sarah Thomas, program manager of the nonprofit Chico Housing Action Team. "The vacancy rate in Chico is around 1 percent. Now that we’ve lost all these homes in Paradise, there are going to be more people struggling to find a place to live."

Despite the reality that about one in five Californians live in poverty, the median home value in the state is $544,900, and the median two-bedroom rent is $2,750, according to real estate listings site Zillow.

Before the fire started Nov. 8, thousands of lower-income workers and retirees took refuge in Paradise, where the median home price is $200,900, according to the U.S. Census Bureau data.

FEMA has promised help for qualified, displaced residents — up to three months assistance for homeowners and at least one month for renters.

"We do have the funds, and we will help out in every way we can," Gov. Jerry Brown said Wednesday.

WHAT? Why does a homeowner get three months of help and a renter just one and nobody can get on their feet within those time spans. Disaster upon disaster.

Article also mentioned the Red Cross. My friend in Chico, who is a nurse who's been working with evacuees, said the Red Cross has been worthless. they hand out blankets and pillows and tell people to sign up with FEMA if they want anything else. I despise the Red Cross and United Way. They bring in fortunes and just line their own pockets and that's it. About the equivalent of the Clinton Foundation. IOW, FRAUD. Why is it allowed???

We all know that the CAMP FIRE total is going to continue to go up.

It is doubtful that we'll ever know exactly how many died.

There are people that just split and go start a new life. Using this disaster as a cover for a clean separation from their prior family.
That happened with the St Helens eruption.

Norovirus outbreak now in the California shelters.

"On Wednesday, a shelter housing more than 150 people evacuated from the deadly Camp Fire in California reported evacuees being struck down with a bug."

"According to Fox News, Lisa Almaguer, spokeswoman for the Butte County Public Health Department, told the paper fire evacuees at the Oroville Church of the Nazarene shelter, where roughly 166 people are staying, are also exhibiting norovirus symptoms."

Not only does the Red Cross only provide the bare minimum of shelters, but they also prevent churches and other shelters from even opening. During the Oroville Dam crisis, my church opened a shelter—we allowed small animals, provided meals, wifif and communications. But we were not an authorized shelter, and now we are registered and we were told by Red Cross who now centralizes all this that we were not needed—with 100s and 100s of people staying at the Wal Mart parking lot. How does that make sense? Lots of people won’t go to the Red Cross shelters.

And yes, I am happy for what the Red Cross does; just mentioning some issues.

Just a side note ... Keep in mind that most if not all of the homes here have wood siding or CDX plywood and composition roofs. Also the houses are in a forest that sheds pine needles and tree leaves ALL of the time. One spark and this is the fuel for the fire.

Deadly California fire could worsen state's homeless crisis

 Quoting: Madame Royston

People should tell the Red Cross to eat shit and go about with their shelters however they see fit.
In his poem Human Pride, Marx admits that his aim is not to improve the world, reform or revolutionize it, but simply to ruin it and enjoy it being ruined:

With disdain I will throw my gauntlet full in the face of the world,
And see the collapse of this pygmy giant whose fall will not stifle my ardor.
Then will I wander godlike and victorious through the ruins of the world
And, giving my words an active force, I will feel equal to the Creator.

Normalize every aberrant behavior, bring common all deviancy and let fly the reins of morality and reason, then welcome in that utopia that liberals embrace called communism, that which most Americans with but a shard of ethic would immediately recognize as evil.
