Re: Help me identify these stones / carvings?
Ok ... I grabbed a few more rocks lol

I grabbed the one I think the stone on the right in my first picture was attached to ... god knows when ... going to have to search for the base of the one on the left. (If it exists)

Took another pic close up at the base of the stone ... different rock type attached? Looks crystal?

IMAGE ( [link to i68.tinypic.com] )

This rock was dense / heavy ... like 100lbs ... way too heavy for its size.

Anyone identify rock types? Lol that tell me anything? Almost looks like metal in the white rock / close up

The second rock next to the larger white / grey one was next to the white part of the big one in the hole ... figured I would grab it too ... daylight tomorrow

Place a ruler or a few quarters or dollar bills infront of them for scale & take more pics.

Just incase they vanish by morning!

Shit like that always seems to happen.

Edges of carvings appear too sharply defined to have been exposed to weather for longer than a short time.

One thing I find interesting on the stone with the bird...

The bullseye lookin' thing.

Circles within circles...and one odd tiny circle that looks out of place...it looks like a depiction of planets orbiting the sun.

I have had hands on it and that little dot stood out to me too to be honest. It does seem placed there ... not an imperfection or error while carving ... glad you saw it too ... bird has a mechanical element to it as well it seems ... seems too futuristic to be historic.

Look at the center of the spirals.

Each one has a head.

I think they are coiled up snakes.

Re: Help me identify these stones / carvings?
Cool thread. 5*!
My first expression is that they were crafted by a modern artisan who found a way to make money selling cool high-end garden ornaments. I’ve seen similar things at some shows. It could also be the previous homeowner carved stone. Both bottoms look perfectly flat.
Are they thick enough to stand up on a flat surface?
No matter what these are, certainly a great find!

Agreed. Carvings and stone both appear recent, no aging wear, no moss or lichens, or even stains. Makes me wonder how they stayed so clean.

Art style? Not authentic anything, likely a mish-mash created by a modern carver.

Really strange. The swirls look ancient Celtic. Of course, that's impossible.
 Quoting: Layman Hid Jest

At first I thought it was celtic or viking origin but saxon seems to be a closer match mainly for the tree. Could be a representation of the saxon sacred tree. I think the spirals represent the sea because of their chaotic aspect. If authentic I'm pretty sure it's of european origin. Not native indian or even meso-american.

similarities to Quetzalcoatl (feathered serpent) carvings to Viking carvings (ship prow and runes) prove Vikings were in Mexico in the 1300's.

In my opinion the drawing is too much simple and symbolic to be of aztec origin. Their art was much more complex than this.

I'm suggesting a mixture of Aztec culture in Viking art. Especially those that settled in Vineland.

Re: Help me identify these stones / carvings?
Thanks for the pin!

The community I live in has a history in gold mining. (How I picked my handle)

Anyways ... barrel quartz is what they mined in the mid 1800's around here. They got 80,000oz out of the mine down the road. ... never been able to find a photograph of what exactly that looked like.

Anyways

I live on the same ridgeline as that old abandoned mine.

The spirals ... instead of universe ... could it signify a ancient mine? Pit spiral mine? ... Different stones with markingings made out of the raw materials in the mine perhaps?

Been finding strange rock samples for years here ... mines seem to be a reason to migrate or significant enough through history to mark positions / ownership / claims?

Wont crush the carved stones of course ... got to figure its worth crushing and checking some of the stones I have gathered over the years and see what metals may be inside. (Maybe made polished beads from quartz?)

I have access to equipment they didnt have in 1850's or back in aztec times :)

Will keep posting in thread as any new info comes to me about any of it.

Re: Help me identify these stones / carvings?
Not new -
Ancient objects have been found in Egypt that look like they were made yesterday and they are thousands of years old - it depends on their exposure.
Your stones are VERY old. You will see i am right bout that. They are obviously part of a much larger structure - one that has been destroyed similar to Peruvian and Egyptian ancient structures.
They are NOT new - They are NOT from Home Depot -
They are VERY OLD. You may hear from the Historians just how old they are.

The Bird looks Egyptian. There have been many artifacts found in the Americas that are similar to those found in Egypt and I think you have some there!!!

Would accept that if anyone posted a similar stone from thier uncles garden.

Yet to see any sign it was a mass produced item.

Not saying antique let alone ancient ... but its something ... abondoned "art" at the very least ... each carved stone weighs like 50lbs ... no way its a souvineer from mexico or anything ... would have taken an entire bag weight allowance for each stone ... and the stone seems to be local at least on the one on the right with all the spirals.
