*Siberia* (OP) User ID: 75419129 Romania 11/30/2018 10:05 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Hiya Sib Quoting: Bee Free Thank you for the Thanksgiving wishes. It was a gluttonous day filled with family and friends. There was leisurely napping even. Very nice. Hope you enjoyed your Thanksgiving too, and that it's been a beautiful week :) Jumping back in (and backing up a little). The article I posted earlier traces the semantic history of the word ‘glitch’ to a quote from astronaut John Glenn in 1962. It’s the oldest example of the word (in indexed print). It says: “Literally, a glitch is a spike or change in voltage in an electrical circuit which takes place when the circuit suddenly has a new load put on it.” Voltage is "the pressure from an electrical circuit's power source that pushes charged electrons (current) through a conducting loop, enabling them to do work such as illuminating a light." I like the astronaut’s definition of glitch. It also seems like a good metaphor for certain kinds of energetic phenomena taking place between the physical and non-physical realms. A sudden surge of source energy. The intrusion of non-local wave patterns. Divergent information signals. The resulting interference being described as slips, malfunctions, accidents, deviations, etc. But, you're absolutely right. These definitions only describe our perception of what glitches do, not what glitches are. I suspect the fundamental nature of glitch power will continue to elude scientific observation and rational description in our interactive modes of reality. Boundaries are needed to gain knowledge of movement, interaction, and creative expression. But source power still transcends these perceptual, rational, and linguistic boundaries. This might explain why uniquely expressive modes of metaphorical communication in art and spirituality are better at communicating source information than formal systems of symbolic language (like Boolean algebra or binary code). Sudden shifts in electrical surges (and their glitchy outcomes) reminds me of the uncertainty principle. The lack of precision in our living systems (or any wave-like system) makes theories of hard determinism seem unlikely. The plausibility of creative will, on the other hand, is strengthened by the existence of sudden power fluctuations, spontaneous interference, and glitchy information signals. We’re connected to a power source beyond the circuit boundaries of locally observed systems. It's kind of a big deal. But popular scientists and institutional philosophers remain unimpressed. The taint of reductionist materialism. I think the paradigm is shifting, though. Glitch power More to say. More links to post. Please pardon the delays. My schedule is in hyper-drive right now. But I'll definitely be back! Heya BF :-) Am happy to hear that you enjoyed a good time for Thanksgiving holiday - and as much as i would want to say that i had a nice vacation at that time, i didn't 'cause i worked. We don't celebrate Thanksgiving in here but that doesn't stop me to send my sincere gratitude to my best friend 42 anytime before falling back to sleep Now, back to our horse dancing on ice, i'll add a few words from an article (cropped words to fit into less than 50%): We take glitch for granted now, but it wasn’t always this way. On September 3, 1976, when the Viking 2 successfully alighted on Mars after a communications failure, the St. Petersburg Times ran the headline, “Viking II lands with glitch.” The word baffled enough subscribers to prompt the newspaper to publish two columns in explanation. One helpful reader, Rabbi Louis M. Lederman, called in to offer this accounting: The word came from Yiddish, meaning to slip or slide. Unlike other Yiddishisms that populate the American lexicon, glitch doesn’t particularly sound like something your bubbe would say. But Yiddishist Michael Wex, author of Born to Kvetch, says glitshn means to slip on ice or to go skating. “Normally it’s, you know, I went outside in November and I—ikh hob zikh a glitsh geton. I slid on the ice, but managed to keep my balance,” he says. “You slip. You don’t necessarily fall.” Wex reports that Yiddish-speaking children in Eastern Europe who slid down snow-covered hills were particularly fond of a move called the vayoymer Dovd glitsh or the “and David said slide.” Adopting the posture of the tachanun prayer, from whose first line the name is taken, they would lower their faces to their forearms before embarking, blind, on their slippery descent. (The prayer is also known as the nefilat apayim, or “falling on the face.”) ... Zimmer found a 1955 Bell Telephone ad in Billboard describing the company argot: “And when he talks of ‘glitch’ with a fellow technician, he means a low frequency interference which appears as a narrow horizontal bar moving vertically through the picture.” A 1959 trade magazine piece about tape-splicing explains: “‘Glitch’ is slang for the ‘momentary jiggle’ that occurs at the editing point if the sync pulses don’t match exactly in the splice.” ... Most of its existence, he adds, has been “under the radar as this technical term.” [link to www.momentmag.com (secure)] I like the "momentary jiggle" term. Sounds so earthly... quaking Don't bother about the delays, girl. Take your time. And have a beautiful weekend ahead [link to www.youtube.com (secure)] i just couldn't resist... |
