While I do agree with you, that feelings, personal actions and thought are necessary for survival, I do not agree that these characteristics constitute the "Ego".

With all due respect, I think it is you who is confused about the terms.

The Ego is the illusionary part of self that is taught to us throughout our lifetime through institutional learning. It is a false sense of self that derives its meaning from the false teachings of separateness and identity.

A newborn baby has no sense of self. It simply is. It is only through the course of its lifetime that it attaches self to a made-up name and identity that is formed from social stigmas.

We think we know what "I" wants, but no one is quite sure who or what the "I" is. This is why it is an illusion.

If we were taught the truth that we are all the same being looking through different eyes at different points in space/time, then the definition of "I" is changed and appears differently to our awareness. We can now understand why it is so important to have compassion for all living beings as they are literally us in another point in space/time.

Now we have a new perspective on what it means to be unique and till part of the whole and thus a deeper and more true concept of what the "I" truly is. We no longer fall victim to personal superficial wants and needs as we can see that by sacrificing and helping another, we are truly helping our self.

The Ego is nothing more then the falsehood that we are identified with this manufactured identity of society. The ego really serves little to no purpose other then perhaps to contemplate the truer meaning of "I".

It is the sense of unique experience that we need to embrace to think, feel and act in a unique way according to our environment that is imperative for survival. We can honor and hone this aspect of ourselves while still abandoning all false senses of identity in search of a more truthful aspect on the situation where individual identity doesn't exist the way we were taught it was.

I realize this is a tough concept to grasp because we have not been taught about it in our institutions. However, I also assert that this information was PURPOSEFULLY held back from us as the ramifications of such knowledge does not bode well to a system bent on controlling others.

Ego is ALWAYS the weakest part of your identity as it is manufactured and not real. If you live there as though it is the only part of you that exists, then you have no power.
