The reason long term investing works is because the market is emotional, because people are emotional. There are just a couple days out of the year, generally speaking, that make up the losses and get the market into the overall average of 12%
Sometimes there are down years!
Yet the market sustains 12%
12% doesn't sound like much until you consider compounding. Compounding the 12% generates a doubling of your total invested assets every 6 years!!
10k becomes 20k in the first 6 years. The next 6 years (12 total) you're at 40k, year 18 and you're up to 80k without lifting a finger...
