Money is an illusion. I go to the store and buy stuff with illusion, lol. What do you expect, all of us to head for the hills and raise/hunt our own food and fend for ourselves to avoid using money? What a disaster that would be, socially, and environmentally. Good life for the few, but if the masses subscribed to it look out.

well, i think that is precisely why they intend on eliminating billions of us, because they know we can not go on much longer the way we have, that if people don't return to living off the land, we will implode, and i should say masses, because the haves will continue to live a decadent lifestyle, as always

people can get by pretty well without money, if you have something to barter for, and you would have to live a simple life, and actually have time to relax, but you won't have a five bedroom home, three cars, a boat, eat out every night , nor have 2.3 spoiled rotten children

Here is what Home & Garden Network (HGTV) had to say about Mike Oehler's underground house, on a special called "The Subterraneans", which has aired frequently. (Check your schedule for future airings):

"This guy literally wrote the book on subterranean housing and sold more than 75,000 copies of The $50 & Up Underground House Book. He lives in his own creation. It's a little snug but it's custom built and has all the creature comforts. You can barely see it, a dream get away nestled deep in the mountains of scenic Northern Idaho on 40 acres of land. Imagine it, all yours for $500. That's what subterranean pioneer Mike Oehler created when he... built one of the nations first underground houses in 1971... Today his little house in a hillside is a rustic gem... It's like having an underground log cabin... and somehow eight feet underground there's still lots of light here. Mike has developed what he calls an Up Hill Patio, a cut behind the house and into the hill, where plants can grow and light and air flow through the house. My yard is going for the 'post-apocalyptic' motif...

My favorite living space was a 1 room studio. I shared a common bathroom with the room adjacent. Easy to clean, and impossible to aquire too much stuff 'cause there simply wasn't enough room for it! Now I own a small house and am constantly fighting the junk monster. Doesn't help that my hobby and job is muscle car restoration...big toys. Shoulda got into coin collecting...

admit it, you're envious & your ego couldn't possibly ever allow you to enjoy the simplicity or freedom this man enjoys.

My apartment is 20 x 20, I've been here so long, five years, that it is starting to seem quite spacious. I like living up off the ground though, a couple of stories up, because I get creeped out by bugs in the house, I don't think you could avoid a bug problem in an underground house? All houses in Minnesota where I'm originally from have basements, and they are all full of spiders and sowbugs and centipedes, etc.

However this guy deserves a lot of credit for his ingenuity and bravery to live like that. I hope no one disturbs him.
