I always said that kind of singing sounds like someone impaled on a fence.
I blame Whitney Houston.

I’ll give Whitney credit though, at least she sounded good when she did it. Actually, it was Cher. Whitney could actually sing. Look up auto tune, every article about it mentions Cher as the first mainstream usage. Auto-tune is not required to produce this effect, it’s just the obnoxious overuse of vibrato to sound “soulful” Whitney had the talent to make it sound good, everything now is just a cheap imitation, sounds like shit. It’s even worse when they add auto tune to that fucking mess.
