Go to a local shelter. You will meet you new cat friend.
No need to buy one, or bred them. For $50 bucks, you’ll have a healthy, neutered mouser...more for a kitten...and you’ll be supporting a great cause!

My Keltec PMR 30 was always good for the "larger than mouse" rodents! EVen at $350 plus peanut butter and mouse traps it's way cheaper than a Maine Coon!

Not all cats chase mice. Don't assume they do. From the cats I've had its the pure breeds that more often do.

An orange-striped, tiger, male and a grey-striped, tiger, male were the best squirreler's I had. I always kept a cat around. I noticed my female cats did not like to catch squirrels as much as the males, but overall, they were better mouser's because they waited for it longer. My orange-striped has been catching more mice now since the weather turned colder.

I can give you a couple for free lol...ok so I have 20...anyway, 2 things, ALL cats will catch mice and squirrels (snakes, birds, grasshoppers, spiders are free too) and regardless of what anyone tells you, feed them well, they will have the energy to hunt, keep them happy and they will repay you, sometimes they drop it in the driveway or on the porch, but hey that's their job. They don't have to eat it to kill it

Around here we have Caturday, which is free adult cats on Saturday, check your local shelter

Until you find where they are getting in nothing will work, first do that. Then most shelters have great homeless mouser...

Yes that’s the best way. Try for one that is a year or two. Usually the shelter has a bit about their personality besides their shots etc. You won’t be sorry. I like double pawed cats but not needed for mouse hunting. I bought a $30 cat cam to put on his collar and I can say he pays for his keep. It records 3 hours of video and he doesn’t stop. He can catch one in a full swoop of his paw. I usually get male cats cause they tend to be bigger and if I pay for the neutering it’s also cheaper. I’ve heard females tend to be better hunters but I haven’t noticed. I think two is great especially around the same age. They always have a buddy.

Opie, you could also host and sponsor a bunch of feral cats on your property. having six feral cats on your property will keep the mice away.

Getting rid of rodents is a big task depending on what kind of environment you live around. It can be daunting. I do know just the smell of having a cat will help some but you really have to fix where they’re coming in or at least make it more difficult so they go somewhere else. Good luck!

You want a barn cat. They're essentially half-feral.
Shelters and rescues have an overabundance of them because tbey're impossible to home.

I picked up a stray black cat a couple years back that was used to being outside. So anytime the outside door would open he would slip outside for most the day and then come back inside at the end of the day.

The cat was afraid of nothing. The first day I brought him in the house my two dogs which are a pit bull and a Boston terrier came to initiate the new guy. The pit bull comes running at the cat with the the Boston in hot pursuit.
The cat unphased slaps the pit bull in the face two or three times and the pit bull decided it didn’t want anything to do with the new housemate. The Boston decided the same as he is only good as backup for the piitbull.

The number of bodies of animals that cat laid in our yard the short time we had it was unbelievable. One day I came home and there was a line of 5 dead moles about 2 feet apart all along my driveway. There were dead snakes...dead birds...dead chipmunks. One day I look 20 feet up in the tree and that cat is chasing a squirrel in the tree. The funniest I saw was we were leaving and I see this wiener dog with long ears running for his life and right behind him was black cat. One other time we had a bat in the house...I knocked it to the ground with a shoe and without missing a beat black cat picked it up and took it outside

When that cat would come in at night my wife would sit in the chair and the black cat would put his paws on her shoulders and stare right into her eyes and sometimes after killing a snake his eyes would be crossed for a few hours. That was the best cat we ever had but only had him about a month...I think he killed everything in the neighborhood and moved on to better hunting grounds because one day he never came back home.


That cat was the John Wick of cats..he was a killing machine

Seriously. So many are put down needlessly. Our shelters even give them away sometimes.

I suspect females respond to reproductive sterilization better than males.

You want a female, as small as possible, and as young as possible.

But, the other poster is right. Peanut butter is the way to go. Mix it with oil and water to make it almost liquid and so the odor gets in the air.

If you have a lot of mice use a live trap. The odor of mice also attracts more mice.

Get a Hemmingway cat. They're supposed to be good luck even if they don't catch a ton of mice.

I had a few strays I took in here in PA. that had 8 toes on all paws.

Like a catcher's mitt.

Get a shelter cat. I got mine at a shelter, she might be a little retarded, and she might meow every night waking me up two hours before my alarm goes off. But she is awesome, and she has thumbs which is pretty cool.
