This morning they attacked us. I am a mother, I'm peaceful. They tear-gassed us. We arrived, we were at the square, then they arrived, they baton-charged us, they fired at us, we had tear gas in our eyes. No one was vandalizing anything, but they got out their water cannon. I did not expect that, they treated us with contempt.” Another worker said: “Money rules, Macron is a banker … He is smashing everything. It started well before, but now we've reached the limits. I work at a hospital, and you see hospitals are closing all the time.” Opposing Macron's planned pension cuts, she added: “A pension is not a privilege, it is the fruit of a lifetime of labor. So retirees have to live with dignity, and today I don't think retirees live with dignity. All this has to stop … there is too much social inequality.” An older worker said, “We regress, regress, regress. Our parents struggled to establish social rights, we are losing everything they won for us. I work for a company and now they only hire temps, you fart once in the wrong direction and you're fired. Workers aren't respected anymore, they treat us just as objects, nothing more. It was always going to explode one day or the other, and now it has begun.” He said, “We should give the ministers 1,200 euros and see if they can make that last for a month. Our kids are struggling, they live at home until they're 30 because they can't find housing, all the entry-level jobs are minimum wage in most professions. Thank God the old folks are still there to help them, because by themselves they don't have the wherewithal. We are totally fed up.” Didier, a mason, told the WSWS: “Macron he has to resign and scram. We didn't vote for him, it's very simple. That guy, we don't want him any more and he has to leave. He's made for the rich, he's not made for the working class … I had a back operation three months ago, I had a heart attack, because I worked all my life. He just sits there and collects money while we struggle. The rich get richer, the poor get poorer; we're going back to the time when we were all serfs.” [link to www.wsws.org (secure)] |

Gilets jaunes are just a symptom From the 1980s onwards, it was clear there was a price to be paid for western societies adapting to a new economic model and that price was sacrificing the European and American working class. No one thought the fallout would hit the bedrock of the lower-middle class, too. It’s obvious now, however, that the new model not only weakened the edges of the proletariat but society as a whole. The paradox is this is not a result of the failure of the globalised economic model but of its success. In recent decades, the French economy, like the European and US economies, has continued to create wealth. We are thus, on average, richer. The problem is at the same time unemployment, insecurity and poverty have also increased. The central question, therefore, is not whether a globalised economy is efficient, but what to do with this model when it fails to create and nurture a coherent society? In France, as in all western countries, we have gone in a few decades from a system that economically, politically and culturally integrates the majority into an unequal society that, by creating ever more wealth, benefits only the already wealthy. The change is not down to a conspiracy, a wish to cast aside the poor, but to a model where employment is increasingly polarised. This comes with a new social geography: employment and wealth have become more and more concentrated in the big cities. The deindustrialised regions, rural areas, small and medium-size towns are less and less dynamic. But it is in these places – in “peripheral France” (one could also talk of peripheral America or peripheral Britain) – that many working-class people live. Thus, for the first time, “workers” no longer live in areas where employment is created, giving rise to a social and cultural shock. 'Workers' no longer live in areas where employment is created, giving rise to a social and cultural shock It is in this France périphérique that the gilets jaunes movement was born. It is also in these peripheral regions that the western populist wave has its source. 50% [link to www.theguardian.com (secure)] Last Edited by CoronaCoaster on 12/02/2018 05:33 AM |

I also question whether the burning of fossil fuels really does lead to long-term warming. Quoting: OceanMan However, I do think that we're ultimately fucked. Maybe it will be warming, cooling, war, famine, disease, asteroids, or volcanoes, our time will come. Consider this The French have said that up until Macron introduced this 25% fuel tax for so called environmental reasons he'd never showed much concern for global warming/climate change. Even so, the working class French have said they are willing to go along with the plan to cut carbon emissions if sensible plans are implemented, such as removing the highest polluting vehicles from the market each year. However a sudden 25% fuel tax is seen by them as unreasonable and a deliberate attack on the poor by the elites. Last Edited by CoronaCoaster on 12/02/2018 07:06 AM |

Quoting: fluffycat I've pretty much given up on the idea of moving somewhere in the west to escape Democrat Florida before 2020. I like the idea of rural Kentucky now. The only "sure bets" out here (west) now, are Wyoming and North Dakota, but both of those places are WAYYY too cold in the winter. But even so, give it time, and these places with be overrun with shitbags too. I thought about that and it seems like the only place to go to get away from liberal nutcases is Russia, LMAO. They can’t afford to eat’ People from across France came to the capital to let the president know how they feel about the new tariffs We are here to protest against the government because of the rise in taxes [in general], not just petrol taxes, which is the straw that broke the camel’s back. We’ve had enough. We have low salaries and pay too much tax and the combination is creating more and more poverty. On the other side, there are government ministers and the president with their fabulous salaries. I’m not against the rich, I just want a fairer distribution of wealth in France. Quoting: Stand Sure PEOPLE GET TIRED OF BEING BUTTFUCKED BY THE FUCKING TYRANTS. It's a similar script though that's what's worrying. Trashing war memorials and iconic monuments doesn't speak volumes of patriotism or respect, so it just makes you think what and who is driving it. Indeed so. Karl Marx greatly admired the French Revolution, and adopted points of it for future use. I know we were taught it was a great event, but dig a little deeper and you will find the bloody terror that the Bolsheviks used against ordinary people. It didnt quite work out like the American Revolution. There is little to be admired about the Paris Commune. The great hopes that common people held at the beginning were drowned in a sea of blood and terror. *** Good deeds bring rewards, bad actions bring troubles. That is a law of the universe. *** |

Ten thousand is manageable trust me, well depends on the size of the nation. I know ten thousand would be enough for Slovenia we only got about eight thousand regular police personnel.
