The young centrist has been hit by a wave of popular discontent over a planned eco-tax rise, which quickly morphed into a broader rebuke of his aloof leadership style and tough policies. Mr Macron’s satisfaction rating fell to 23 per cent in November, down six percentage points on the previous month, the poll for Paris Match and Sud Radio showed.

French parliament’s left parties to discuss vote of no confidence against government

At least three left-wing parties at the French parliament have agreed to discuss a vote of no confidence against the government amid sweeping protests, against Macron’s policies, which have gripped the country.

“We’ve decided to work together to file a no confidence vote [to the government] next Monday. During the coming days, we will seek to increase the number of signatories. We have to show that other ways are possible,” First Secretary of the Socialist Party Olivier Faure wrote on Twitter, using the hashtag #GiletsJaunes (Yellow Vests).

The rallies held under the motto “on the way to Macron’s resignation” caught the president off-guard in his 18 month in the top job. His approval ratings stand at barely 25 percent as many French citizens view him as elitist and out of touch with the common folk, who are unhappy with many of his reforms, such as tax relief for businesses and cuts to pensioners’ benefits.

Afternoon update -

Emmanuel Macron’s popularity rating crashed below the symbolic 20 per cent mark for the first time today as he predicted “major violence” this weekend.

A spokesman for Mr Macron, speaking about further planned protests on Saturday, has told AFP, France’s national news agency: “We have reason to fear a great violence.”

Originally they called for a reduction in the price of diesel and petrol; now disgruntled groups from Left and Right, including students and emergency workers, have joined the campaign.

Mr Macron’s rating has dropped three points to 18 per cent, the third consecutive monthly drop, according to a poll by YouGov.
