SpaceX Capsules May Be Contaminating International Space Station

Capsules from Musk's SpaceX, containing spare food and parts that are being delivered to the International Space Station on the company's Falcon 9 rockets, may be doing far more harm than good, according to a new report from Wired. These deliveries - called Dragon capsules - may be contaminating the space station by outgassing the second that they arrive.

At the ISS, an onboard piece of scientific equipment called the SAGE III, used to measure ozone molecules and aerosols in the Earth's atmosphere, has seen its contamination sensors, generally used to measure how its environment could influence its readings, show spikes after three Dragon capsules docked at the ISS.

Something in the docking Dragon capsules has been outgassing, according to the article. Outgassing is when molecules from construction wind up being released into the atmosphere. It is what gives new cars their "new car smell" (you're smelling PVC emanating from parts and components, i.e. the dashboard, etc.) and was the basis behind Whitney Tilson‘s formaldehyde-based Lumber Liquidators short some years back.

Well, that's not good. I guess it's also a problem with the reused capsules, not just on their first fights? I'm reading this as I watch ISS grapple the CRS 16 Dragon.

As Dragon is currently the only practical down mass for bringing experiments back from ISS, I think the article was being a little sensationalist in its claim that Dragon is more of a problem than it's worth just because of this issue. It's a problem, and there probably isn't an easy fix for it. The bigger problem may end being when crew Dragon starts flying and brings a crew up to live on the station for six months at a time there will be a much longer source of contamination. Also, the article wasn't super clear but this is external contamination by the looks of it. It's not a crew safety issue.

No, they are starting the story line for why SpaceX won't be successful. We have never been in space. No one landed on the moon, and humans aren't going to live on Mars.

The thing about SpaceX is it is a inexsperianced space agency and instead should be merged with Nasa as theres nodoubt far better containment quarenteencells made by nasa with their many years of exsperiance and all and lets face it SpaceX new designs + Nasas exsperiance over many years would be a courperation match made in heaven.

Um, they continually fly meat sacks filled with creepy crawlies there. I would not be worried about contamination in a petri dish of humans floating around the globe.

just a material science issue. Can be solved easily by putting these dragons in a vacuum chamber before launch. Not cheap but cheaper than redoing anything.
