I would suggest that you have your nephew look into many ways of self-defense that are legally easily accessible, like a padlock on a chain or aerosol to spray into eyes etc, just to be on the safe side.

My bad. Still, doesn't hurt to take precautions. Many Aussies visit there too. Maybe to cover up their crimes.

Not that common, same odds as everywhere else. My daughter backpacked Australia last year for six weeks, had a blast, Aussies very friendly.

Your nephew will have a great time and will return home safe and well by observing a few simple rules.. Here are 2.

1. Don't swim outside the flags when visiting the beach. Many tourists meet their end this way. If no one else swimming there do go in the water, especially in the top end.

2. If visiting the outback, at this time of year, water water water.. lots of water. If the vehicle breaks down, don't leave and go searching for help as help could be a few hundred miles away. Add to this, if venturing off the beaten path let someone know of your time of departure and ETA & destination. Maybe a CB radio too.

New Zealand would have to be the most friendliest welcoming country I've ever visited. I've been there a few times and everyone super chill. If this person of interest has done something bad to the missing girl, I'll be surprised if it wasn't an imported Kiwi.

If you were a millionaire and your kid was going hiking in the wilds, why wouldn't you have a former military hired to discreetly follow and step in and protect if needed? Throw a capable dude 10k for a two week contract.
