M-CLASS SOLAR FLARE !!!

An M3 flare is in progress as observed by the GOES Xray detector, with an estimated peak time of about 15:00 UT. No image is available to find out the location of the flare, but a likely candidate is the returning NOAA AR 0957.

M2.3, that sunspot looks very promising and reminds of several very busy ones two years ago.

IA. Analysis of Solar Active Regions and Activity from 31/2100Z
to 01/2100Z: Solar activity increased to moderate levels. New
Region 960 (S06E73) was responsible for two M-class flares during
the past 24 hours. An M1 x-ray flare occurred at 01/0651Z and an
M2/Sf event occurred at 01/1459Z. A Tenflare of 100 sfu was
associated with the M2 event. This region remains too close to the
east solar limb to ascertain a complete magnetic analysis. Region
958 (S13E22) developed several sunspots during the period and is now
classified a Bxo beta magnetic sunspot group. Region 959 (S12E49)
contains two small umbra and was numbered today.
IB. Solar Activity Forecast: Solar activity is expected to be at
moderate levels. Region 960 is likely to produce further M-class
flare activity.
IIA. Geophysical Activity Summary 31/2100Z to 01/2100Z:
The geomagnetic field was at quiet to unsettled levels. The greater
than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit reached high levels
again today.
IIB. Geophysical Activity Forecast: The geomagnetic field is
expected to be at quiet to unsettled levels on 02 June. Active
conditions are expected on 03 and 04 June due to a recurrent coronal
hole high speed stream.

MAJOR SOLAR FLARE ALERT

Synopsis:

Region 10960 (near the east limb) produced an impulsive major class M7.0
solar x-ray flare at 02:12 UTC on 03 June. No significant radio emissions were
associated with this event. This region has rotated into view as a developing
magnetic beta-gamma-delta sunspot complex. An area of moderate to strong
magnetic shear has been identified recently and is supportive of additional
minor M-class and isolated major M to X-class solar flare activity.

The major flare observed today is not expected to result in any
significant influxes of energetic protons. However, the risk for increased
populations of energetic protons will become elevated during the next 3 to 5
days as the sunspot complex continues to rotate into a more favorable
location on the Sun.

No significant coronal mass ejection impact is expected from todays
event. But again, the risk for impacts will increase during the next 3 to 5
days as the region rotates into a more sensitive alignment with the Earth.

Thats like announcing that theres been a 3.1 EQ in claifornia.

Such things, like sungrazer comets, burn up in the sun's corona.

I've only seen galaxy class star cruisers with shields at maximum be able to get very close.
