Do something selfless today

Ain’t that the truth. I once knew a very grumpy old man who
nobody liked much. He learned through the grapevine that
my puppy had died and that I was devastated (I was around 8 years
old). One day, this grumpy old man drove up to our house, and
got out of his car holding a collie pup. He said it was for me!
I could hardly believe it.

That collie pup was my best friend and faithful companion for many
years, thanks to the grumpy old man who cared enough to give him
to me.

After the old man passed on, a lot of people remembered him for
being grumpy and mean. Not me. I remembered his selfless act
of kindness, and the happiness it brought.

If he was here today, I would thank him again, and give him a hug.

I am not sure if any of this qualifies as selfless... I think empathetic people can really feel significantly rewarded from the wonderful feelings that come from true generosity (as shown here).. it is one of those classic conundrums, but I believe that intention matters and that we can all do genuinely good things, putting others above ourselves. Not all games are zero-sum, but quite often there is a multiplier effect when doing good and there simply becomes more joy to go around.

I was shocking...

It’s not always easy or convenient to stop and think about what the other
guy wants or needs. Most people are overwhelmed and exhausted just
trying to keep their own act together. Working long hours, raising kids,
relationships, paying bills, health problems, car problems, house problems,
etc...etc...don’t leave us with much time or energy to focus on others.

That said, the simplest things we do can often be the greatest things.
They can make all the difference- to another person, to a group of people,
and even to a world. I am here today to remind myself, and everyone else
of that.

Truth exists. Is it evil to tell you your heading to San Francisco when you say you’re trying to get to San Jose?

Helping other people, really helping them
can be a real pain in the ass. In the end they’ve gotta help themselves. So what real service can we provide?

The wise fisherman does not catch fish to feed a village.
He teaches the villagers how to catch their own fish, so
they may feed themselves.

Helping others is not the same thing as enabling them.
For example, if you assist a child with their homework, you are
helping them to learn. But if you do the homework for them,
you are enabling their dependency on you to get the job done.
Big difference.

I just bought one of my Special Needs clients a radio,,,,he is going to be excited when he gets it tonight.

The best thing you can give, and it's the cheapest thing too, is a fuck.

And I don't mean with your dick. I mean, give a fuck. About what you do, your friends, your family.

We used to send in extra snacks for a few kids in my granddaughter's class who never had any. I had the impression one girl only ate breakfast & lunch at school.


When our children were very young, my husband got laid off. He would show up at a temporary service and take whatever labor job they had that day. It was Christmas time and we had no money for presents.

On Christmas Eve, the the ladies who worked at the temp service showed up at our house with presents for the kids! We will never forget that!

We have always tried to pay it forward whenever possible.

The gift is in the giving
