Look at the photos from Pond inlet, North-West Baffin Island, looks like an awesome place to live... if you can afford the food prices that is.

The chest beating and posturing is getting to be a massive pain in my ass. I lived through the eighties as a kid with the threat of Russians.

Now, we have to do a round three with my kid having this over his generations head. Here's an idea. Put all the World Leaders in a WWE style cage death match, the last four standing get to lead.

No shit, In the environment I came up when I was a kid I was a little bit more exposed than your average person, luckily I didn't get it at the time but that is shit I don't wish to repeat.

Unfortunately it's always leaders sending someone else to fight their pointless battle, never themselves.

I actually have spent a bit of time in the area (I was really young though) It was stunning from what I remember, While being cold it is much better to accommodate for cold weather than most would expect, especially the kind of cold that you experience in the area.

The Isolation is a real pain though and while I don't remember specifically what food and energy costs were my buddy that works in Pond Inlet works for a company called North Mart which is basically a all-purpose store which sells pretty much everything one could need in the area that can't be accommodated from the land itself.

As everything is either flown in or sea-lifted weight comes at a big premium and fresh veggies are in serious short supply, you can get frozen but if you are looking for a salad you're kinda fucked if you don't want to pay like $30 or more for a small salad that would normally be accommodated with a below average supper in the south.

Things to think about, thats the cost of isolation.

One more point though with the area, the majority of Baffin Island (I'm not 100% about Pond Inlet) is below the arctic circle still so you do still have light and dark cycles every day all year so 24h Night or Day though it does get pretty close.

ahhh the good old days. Remember those, and one "odd" one. Were sent to the lunchroom and huddled up against the west wall (under the big shatter resistant windows, with the wire mesh in it) for a while. In retrospect, I'm thinking it may have been during the Cuban missile crisis, but not entirely sure.

I am really glad that I am too young to really honestly remember what heightened Nuclear tensions were really like and hope we all don't have to experience it again.

F16s, triple tanked, will not make it across the pond, maybe a stop at Kef and/or Sondy?

spent a glorious year at Cape Dyer radar site...1979-80. Scenic to beat the band, weather...the best and the worst. The Arctic Circle passed through the 10 mile road that wound from the lower camp (airfield) and the upper camp (radar site). Look at historic googleEarth pics of the site, older pics showed the 3 "trains" (buildings) joined by the overhead bridge...home sweet home for a year.
