I think that just as babies are born understanding that faces have eyebrows, we are also born with an understanding of humanity, and the "characters" of human-ness.

For instance, when a woman begins to go gray she becomes "classified" by this inner instinct as a different type of person than a non-gray-haired woman. Men do not normally change classifications when they gray at the temples. (Hence, hair dye is used far more often for women than men, as women try to put off this re-classification as long as possible) If Princess Leia had some gray hair, she'd be a totally different character. But Han Solo could have some. Eilonwy doesn't have gray hair in the books (although I do now!)

The idea of a savior is an example of this cast of characters (Luke Skywalker or Taran of Caer Dallben).

I think Merlin is an example of a "stock character" that our instincts understand. The old, male hermit, the knowledge collector, the magician, the unseen hand, the mentor. Esoteric, eccentric, and ancient. (Yoda, for instance. In "The Castle of Llyr"-- Dallben).

You don't know what you are saying, this isn't about balance yin and yang, but of pure evil that if unleashed you would sease to exist. Something similar. That bad for mankind.

Actually, he was very handsome - to me-for a very long time so the always long white hair or grey doesn't fit. He's probably cut it off in rebellion of stereotype by now. I'd suppose he'd look just like us.
